Textbook: Moore, David S., The Basic Practice of Statistics, 4th edition (ISBN 0-7167-7726-6). The book is available new and used at the campus bookstores, and also online.

Software: Throughout the semester, we will use the statistical software package, MINITAB. Thispackage is available at the Software Licensing Centre in Bellefield Hall for $5. MINITAB is also available at all computing labs on campus, including the Statistics Lab (CL 435).

Course Description:

This is an introductionto the basic methods of applied statistics. Upon the completion of the class, you should be able to

1) Explore data with graphs and basic descriptive statistics,

2) Understandthe normal distribution, very basic probability theory, random samplings from populations, random allocation to experimental treatments, sampling distributions, and concepts of confidence intervals and hypothesis testing,

3) Conduct tests of means in one-sample, two-sample and paired-sample, regression analysis, categorical data analysis and standard analysis of variance with the aid of Minitab.

Recitations primarily focus on question and answer sessions and problem solving, as well as clarification of lecture material. Demonstrations of Minitab will also be given.Recitations on the following dates will be held in the Stat Lab (CL 435): Sep.5, Sep. 11, Sep.25/26, Oct.9/10, Nov. 6/7, Nov.20/21.

Stat Lab: For hours of operation and names of TAs on staff, visit avoid times when it's been reserved (scroll down to their calendar). The Stat Lab is in 435 Cathedral of Learning.

Free tutoring:

You may get free tutoring through the Academic Resource Centre at the Gardner Steel Conference Centre. You may contact them at (412) 648-7920 or visit their website

Course Web: You should visit the course web frequently (). You will be able to access all homework assignments, homework solutions, quiz solutions, practice exams, and other materials that will aid you in preparation for exams.

Grading:

Homework (best 10 out 11)30%

Quizzes15%

Midterm 115%

Midterm 215%

Final Exam 25%

90-100% A; 80-89% B; etc. Plusses are assigned to the students at the top of each grade range and minuses to the students at the bottom.

Homework Assignments

Do the problems in order and neatly staple all sheets. You may, and are encouraged to work together on the assignments, but everyone must submit their own assignment. In general, late homework will not be accepted.

The midterms and final will be closed book. You will be permitted to use two two-sided 8.5 x 11 sheets of notes for the examinations. Be sure tobring a calculator. No make up exams will be administered. As the material is cumulative in nature, it is very important not to fall behind. See me or your recitation instructor for help if you do!

Quizzeswill be open book/open notes, so be sure to bring a calculator and your book. All quizzes will be administered in recitation. You may find it beneficial to prepare a sheet beforehand in order to avoid time-consuming searches through the text. No make up quizzes will be administered.

Attendance/Class Participation:

Attendance is not mandatory, although very strongly encouraged as the material tends to be difficult to learn on your own. Although no portion of the course grade is attributed directly to attendance and participation, regular attendance and active participation will surely positively impact your performance in the course and gain you the benefit of the doubt in any cases of borderline final grades.

NOTE: Monday, October 13 is Fall Break and no classes meet that day. Instead, all Monday classes (including lectures AND recitations) are shifted to Tuesday, October 14 and classes for Tuesday are cancelled that week.

Academic Integrity Statement

Cheating/Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Students suspected of violating the University of Pittsburgh Policy on Academic Integrity, as stated in the February 1974 Senate Committee on Tenure and Academic Freedom, will be required to participate in the outlined procedural process as initiated by the instructor. A minimum sanction of a zero score for the quiz, homework, or exam will be imposed.
