[Bob Mainwaring]

One of the very biggest challenges that the world faces about increasing urbanisation…

High-angle view of the Shell Concept Car against the dark interior background, as previously, cutting to a closer view as the side angled door descends and closes.

[Bob Mainwaring]

…the increase in personal mobility and doing that in an affordable way.

Mid-view of Bob Mainwaring against the background of the Shell Concept Car in the darkened interior previously described, the side angled door up.

[Bob Mainwaring]

So, this car attempts to tackle that head-on. The car itself is the result of a three-year partnership between Gordon Murray design, responsible for the vehicle, Geo Technology, responsible for the engine. Shell’s role in this was to design the lubricants to have as low a friction level as possible and, at the same time, to ensure the engine and the drive line were well matched to those so that the overall friction levels within the engine were really, really low.

High-angle view of the car’s interior, panning quickly to the www.makethefuture.shell.com branding on the lower part of the side panel of the car. Mid-view of Bob Mainwaring against the background of the Shell Concept Car, all as previously described. Wide view of two men standing either side of the parked Shell Concept Car, in front of a white structure, cloudy skies visible above. This cuts to a mid-view of another man standing beside the car against a white background. Close-up of the “Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology” branding on one of the car’s panels. Mid-view of Bob Mainwaring against the background of the Shell Concept Car, all as previously described. Bird’s eye view footage the Shell Concept Car being tested on a track.

[Bob Mainwaring]

It’s a small car, designed primarily for use in cities.

Footage of the Concept Car rounding a bend on the track, first approaching in front view, then passing in side view and receding in rear view.

[Bob Mainwaring]

The motive power within the vehicle is from a simple three-cylinder gasoline engine. We chose that to challenge just how good can you be if you really try with technology that exists today.

[Bob Mainwaring]

The tests that we’ve completed on it have really been astonishing in how efficient the vehicle has been, that it’s produced 107 miles per gallon at 45 miles an hour.

Continued front view footage of the concept car testing on the track, a city skyline in the background. Mid-view of Bob Mainwaring against the background of the Shell Concept Car, all as previously described.

[Bob Mainwaring]

That’s 2.67 litres per 100 km.

Wide front view footage of the Concept Car testing on the track, passing under a “Make the Future London” billboard and approaching the shot before exiting at frame-right.

[Bob Mainwaring]

So really impressive figures. So, we’ve learnt a huge amount from doing this. When we’re engaging with the auto manufacturers, things that we’ve learnt here, we can apply directly to them, to their benefit. In the automotive world, much of their technology has been driven by tightening emissions legislation, particularly in CO2. And, of course, this tackles this really well and encourages them to make use of the lubricants we have to drive driveline efficiency forward.
