TIPS:

  1. You can write in whatever chronological order your prefer. Most recent first going down to least recent, or vice versa. But whatever you choose you MUST apply that same order to every area of your resume. You can’t have jobs going from recent -> past and then have it past -> recent for extracurricular.
  2. DO NOT PUT “Bachelor’s of blahblahblah” unless you have OBTAINED a bachelor’s. You CAN put Major – Bachelor’s of Science in Biology because THAT tells them that is the degree you are aiming to obtain. If you simply put the degree type without the word major anywhere, they will assume you are post-bac and it can be considered providing fraudulent information.
  3. DO NOT PUT your gpa if it is awful unless they ask for you to do so in the resume. If your major gpa is nice, and cumulative awful, put both because the major gpa will make it look a bit better. You can’t however put just a major gpa without your cumulative because that will raise flags.
  4. For the SKILLS HIGHLIGHT section, put whatever academic/job skills you think are applicable to what you are applying for. Only put things that are true and you are pretty good at – not beginner or else you face having those skills called upon one day and making a fool out of yourself. (Ex: I know someone who put they could play violin like an expert for med school and they asked him to be on the orchestra, he quickly got in trouble for exaggerating).
  5. DO NOT PUT ANYTHING THAT WILL HURT YOU! A RESUME IS A CHANCE FOR YOU TO HIGHLIGHT YOUR ATTRIBUTES, NOT BRING YOURSELF DOWN!!!!! DON’T PUT A JOB WHERE YOU WERE FIRED OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT DAMAGES YOUR CHARACTER!!!
  6. This example is a job and academic combo. If you want it to be more job oriented, you can add an OBJECTIVE section at the very top above education that illustrates what you’re applying for, what you can bring to the table, and how excited you are to get it. Be short and concise. 2 sentences MAX.
  7. Everything should be read in first person. If you put “Works well with others” that is wrong. You have to see how it sounds with an I/I am infront of it. The correct way to write it would be “Work well with others.”
  8. Everything should be in the correct tense. “Roll silverware” is INCORRECT if that is a description for a PAST job. The correct tense would be past, saying “Rolled silverware.” A current job would be the first tense which was present tense.
  9. OFFERING RECOMMENDATIONS AND REFERENCES MAKES YOU LOOK GOOD EVEN IF THEY DON’T REQUIRE THEM, ESPECIALLY AS A TEACHER!!! IT SHOWS YOU LIKE TO PUT THE EXTRA FOOT FORWARD TO GET WHAT YOU WANT AND ARE CONFIDENT GOING ABOUT IT. SAME GOES FOR SENDING THANK YOU EMAILS AND LETTERS AFTER ANY INTERVIEW!
  10. If you can’t fit everything onto one page – TEXT BOXES ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS!!!!!
  11. Last but not least, a resume should be ONE page unless it says otherwise. As a teacher you may create a curriculum vita, which is basically an expanded resume. But until then assume one page only!!!
