Overall purpose of these problem types: To encourage students solve problems involving interpreting multiplication equations as comparisons and to represent verbal multiplicative comparisons as multiplication equations.

Multiplicative Comparison (Multiplication)/Compare (Unknown Product):

·  The soccer tryouts had 4 times as many kids try out than the basketball tryouts. The basketball tryouts had 51 kids show up. How many kids went to the soccer tryouts?

·  The cobra snake is 3 times as long as the garden snake. The garden snake is 48 inches long. How long is the cobra snake?

·  The students in Mr. Garrett’s science class release a weather balloon every school year. The balloon this year the balloon traveled twice as high as last year’s balloon. Last year, the balloon reached an altitude of 60,000 ft. What altitude did the balloon reach this year?

·  The horse on Old Macdonald’s farm is 12 times as tall as the mouse. The mouse is 4 inches tall standing up. How tall is the horse?

·  The fourth grade students collected data about the types of pizza students liked at their school for the upcoming fourth grade pizza party. The students had the choice between pepperoni or cheese pizza. Cheese pizza got 3 times the amount of votes than pepperoni pizza. Pepperoni pizza had 26 votes. How many votes did cheese pizza receive?

·  People can travel in many different ways. A long time ago, horses were the fastest way to travel before trains were invented. A train can travel 25 times faster than a horse. If a horse can travel 30 miles per hour, how fast would a train be?

Multiplicative Comparison (Measurement Division)/Compare (Group Size Unknown):

·  The high diving board at the Jones Center is 12 ft tall. The low diving board is 4 feet tall. The high dive is how many times taller than the low dive?

·  During the lunch time hour McDonald’s sold 60 cheeseburger Happy Meals. At that same time they only sold 10 hamburger Happy Meals. McDonald’s sold how many times more cheeseburger Happy Meals than hamburger Happy Meals during lunch time?

·  The National Weather Service reported that there was a tornado in Kansas that stayed on the ground for 28 minutes. There was also another tornado in Oklahoma that stayed on the ground for only 7 minutes. How many times longer did the tornado last on the ground in Kansas than Oklahoma?

·  Dogs are all different sizes. A Great Dane is 32 inches tall. Yorkshire dogs are typically 8 inches tall. The Great Dane is how many times taller than the Yorkshire?

·  Every year, Matthew’s family decides where they want to go on their summer vacation. To save money this year, his parents decided to drive to their vacation location instead of flying. Matthew found out that Chicago was 636 miles away. Little Rock was only 212 miles away. Chicago is how many times further than Little Rock?

·  Wal-Mart sells lots of candy canes during the holiday season. They have candy canes in many different flavors. The peppermint candy canes are still the best seller. During one holiday season Wal-Mart will sell an average of 750 boxes of peppermint candy canes. At that same time, they will only sell about 250 boxes of bubble gum candy canes. How many times more will they sell peppermint candy canes compared to bubble gum boxes?

·  The snowfall total for Boston, MA was 44 inches last year. That is 4 times more than the snowfall amounts for Kansas City, MO. How much snow did Kansas, MO receive last year?

·  The giant water slide at White Water is 90 feet tall. That is 3 times taller than the slide at the Springdale Aquatic Center. How tall is the slide at the Springdale Aquatic Center?

·  Cristin saved up 56 dollars this summer by babysitting. That is 7 times more money than her brother has in his piggy bank. How much money does Cristin’s brother have in his piggy bank?

·  A dog’s age can be represented by human years or dog years. Your dog, Spot, is 91 years old in dog years. You know that dog years are 7 times more than human years. How old would Spot be in human years?

·  Cori loves to babysit on the weekends to earn some money. Over the summer, she was a nanny for a couple of kids down the street from her house. She earned 500 dollars as a nanny during the summer time. That is 10 times the amount she earned during the month of November babysitting. How much money did she earn in November?

·  The average life expectancy for a horse is 27 years. That is 9 times longer than the life expectancy of a mouse. What is the average life span of a mouse?
