STANDARDISATION OF CLASS FEES: EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
1. A meeting was convened with Finances on 7 April 2005.
2. The following members were present:
Mr FS du Plooy (Convenor)
Mr M Wessels (Cooperative Education)
Ms M Hoffman (Finances)
Ms C Blignaut (Finances)
Mr W Jacobs (Cooperative Education)
3. Class and levy fees of the three campuses, as well as for individual programmes of faculties were compared.
4. The following findings were made:
4.1 Experiential Learning fees for an individual programme, had been standardised on all three campuses, e.g. N Dip:/B Tech: Architectural Technology is R470 on all three campuses.
4.2 Fees for individual programme are differentiated, eg.
Architectural Technology: R470
Electrical Engineering: R330
4.3 Levies are also imposed for Experiential Learning.
4.4 On average,EL class fees are much less than EL levies, e.g.
Class fee Levy
R40 R290
4.5 Fees per individual programmes could differ substantially, e.g.
Programme X: R 470
Programme Y: R2 200
4.6 Levies for certain programmes seem meaningful, whilst others are questioned.
RECOMMENDATION:
- That levies for Experiential Learning fall away.
- That a standard class fee be introduced for Experiential Learning instructional offerings.
- That standard class fee be determined in accordance with the average class fees for second and third year instructional offerings for TUT, e.g.:
Average class fee for second year: R1 080
Average class fee for third year: R 980
R1 060
Experiential Learning class fee: R1 060
2
- That meritorious cases where higher fees are needed, be approved by Senate.
However, the committee also recommends that the task team be extended to include staff from academic faculties, student representatives, as well as Mr G du Toit of Finances, to formulate final recommendations.
5. The committee also recommends that extracurricular fees, as well as the levy for Electronic Resources, not be applied to Experiential Learning registrations.
