Page: 1 of 4

Standard Specification: P3502

Dated: May 2005

1.0Preamble:

This specification is for the application of the Vulkem 350/345/346 traffic deck coating membrane system to existing concrete plaster areas. The specification deals with preparation of the surfaces before the application of the waterproofing coating.

The Vulkem membrane comprises 3 coat of a modified polyurethane coating to the concrete plaster structure and suitable primer to provide a good key to damp or porous surfaces.

2.0SURFACE PREPARATION:

2.1 General Responsibility:

Unless expressly agreed otherwise at time of contract pricing, all work in this section shall be the responsibility of the Main Contractor, whether carried out by his own staff, other sub-trades or the Specialist Finishes Sub-Contractor. In the latter case, such preparatory work shall be priced separately from work defined in Sections 3.0 - 4.0 inclusive.

2.2Captive Blast Treatment:

All concrete surfaces to receive the Vulkem Membrane System shall be captive shot-blasted to give a light profile regardless of quality of the concrete finishes and to remove all traces of contamination on the surface.

Note that generally topping concrete shall be finished to NZS 3114 US Finish, and shall have cured a minimum of 21 days after pouring, before membrane application is begun.

2.3 Concrete Imperfections:

Surface imperfections shall be patched, using either an approved epoxy mortar for minor holes, or a Chevacryl Admix gauged patch mortar for larger irregularities, in accordance with the Manufacturers recommendations.

3.0SURFACE PRETREATMENT:

3.1Sealant Fillets:

Where indicated/required, 20x20 minimum Tremco Tremflex PU-1 sealant fillets shall be installed at transitions between decks and adjacent cladding elements so as to provide a bridge for installation of the membrane.

3.2Shrinkage Cracks:

Shrinkage cracks in the concrete surface, which are 3mm wide or greater, shall be ground out to a minimum 6mm-wide by 12mm-deep for sealant treatment. Using Tremco Tremflex PU-1 in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

3.3All hairline cracks and untreated cracks up to 3mm wide shall be striped out with a 150mm wide strip of Vulkem 450Thix Basecoat applied 750 microns thick and feathered at the edges so as to remain inconspicuous within the total membrane system.

3.4All saw-cut cracks or joints shall be neatly filled with Tremco Tremflex PU-1 Sealant finished flush with the concrete surface. Backer Rod shall be used as appropriate to ensure that sealant beads are of the correct dimensions in all cases.

3.5Apply a cant strip of Tremco Tremflex PU-1 Sealant around all penetrations so as to allow a transition for the Vulkem Membrane where necessary. Such cant strips shall be 12mm x12mm to provide a smooth transition.

4.0MEMBRANE APPLICATION:

4.1 General:

All work described in this section shall be carried out so as to provide an applied membrane system which will match a prior approved factory made sample in respect of thickness, colour and surface profile. A site sample of at least 1m² shall then be applied and approved prior to commencement of work.

4.2 Priming:

Friable Surfaces only:

All surfaces which are porous or friable shall be primed as required with Traxx 1050/1070 at nominated spreading rate. Primed areas shall be overcoated as soon as the Primer has “tacked-off” sufficiently to walk on. Primer application shall be by medium-nap roller or airless spray at a spreading rate of 8-10m² per litre.

All Surfaces:

All prepared concrete/plaster surfaces shall receive one (1) mixed and diluted coat of Chevaline Epistixx Primer, by brush, roller or airless spray at 8-10 sqm/litre. Allow to dry before the application of the Basecoat.

4.3 Detail Coats:

Where nominated in Manufacturers Application/QA Procedures, a detail coat of Vulkem 450 shall be applied to provide adequate membrane film build and strength.

4.4 Basecoat Application:

Mix and apply as recommended one (1) full coat of Vulkem 350 Basecoat at spreading rate of 1.3 sqm/litre so as to give a correct film build. Ensure out-gassing does not occur, and correct if necessary using approved means. Allow to cure no more than 24 hours before proceeding.

4.5 Bodycoat Application:

Mix and apply as recommended one (1) full coat of Vulkem 345 Bodycoat at a spreading rate of not less than 2.0 sqm/litre. Broadcast Medium NS aggregate at 0.7kg/sqm and back-roll to achieve an even texture. Allow to cure overnight.

4.6 Ramps and Turning areas – Further Bodycoat:

Mix and Apply as recommended one (1) full coat of Vulkem 345 Bodycoat at a spreading rate of not less than 2.0 sqm/ litre. Broadcast Medium NS Aggregate at 0.7 kg/sqm and back-roll to achieve an even texture. Allow to cure overnight. This extra bodycoat to high use areas shall be applied by the double coat method as outlined in the QA document.

4.7 Topcoat Application:

Mix and apply Vulkem 346 topcoat to the surface by roller at 4.0 sqm/litre. Where wet slip resistance is required, allow to oversand the surface to match prior approved sampled. Note that the aggregate size in any area will be in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions. Allow Topcoat to cure at least 48 hours prior to allowing light traffic on the surface.

4.8 Procedures:

Ensure that at all times all work is carried out in accordance with procedures published by Tremco/Equus for this system. A full Quality Assurance Program shall be maintained during installation. All detail work shall be carried out strictly in accordance with recommendations, and all surfaces shall be fully inspected for integrity under the QA Program prior to hand-over.

5.0MAINTENANCE & WARRANTY:

5.1 Maintenance:

Should the membrane be damaged at any time by undue mechanical force or excessive building movement, the surface shall be repaired using materials compatible with the existing membrane applied in accordance with guidelines supplied by Equus Industries Ltd.

It should also be noted that at all times the surface should be inspected, cleaned and maintained strictly in accordance with the provisions of the Maintenance Statement provided as part of the System Warranty provided for the project.

To maintain the life and integrity of the membrane system, it is recommended that an inspection be carried out at approximately two (2) years into the life of the coating system to determine surface appearance and integrity, and allow for recommendations to be made as to any topcoat re-coat work required so as to maintain the integrity of the system beyond the original warranted life.

5.2 Warranty:

Provided the system is applied in accordance with this Specification may be warranted for a period of ten (10) years as to waterproof integrity, utilising the Equus/Tremco form of
warranty, provided that:-

All work is carried out strictly in accordance with published Equus/Tremco procedures and
instructions and any written modifications or variations to the above.

All work is carried out by an Approved Equus Applicator.

The area is subject to use conditions described to Equus/Tremco and the Approved
Contractor at the time the work is done, and those conditions remain for the term of the
Warranty.

A Maintenance Program is instituted in accordance with the Maintenance Statement, prepared by Equus Industries for the project.
