Standard Operating Procedure for the

HerathermProgrammable Oven

OVERVIEW

The Heratherm is a programmable oven for heating samples between 50 °C (122 °F)and 250 °C (482 °F). Applications include drying, curing, and heat treating materials. Please see short reference cards under oven for reminders on instructions below.

Some general safety rules for the oven: Do not place any samples on oven floor to risk overheating samples; arrange samples evenly through the oven and not too close to oven walls; do not use oven with any chemical that may corrode the oven seals or walls, also keep in mind that the chemical being placed in the oven should not release any harmful fumes into our lab.

Please label the oven with your name and expected time of use as well as the contents. Feel free to include any special instructions about your material.

Eye protection – Safety glasses

  • Safety glasses must always be worn when working in the lab.

Hand protection

  • Gloves must be worn when handling chemicals. Please consult the glove chemical compatibility guide on the group website and make sure to select the appropriate gloves for the chemicals you will be using.
  • Use insulated gloves when working with a hot oven and when placing or removing items from a hot oven.

Body Protection

  • A lab coat must always be worn when handling chemicals.
  • Close-toed shoes that cover the top of the foot are required when in the lab.
  • Long pants are required when in the lab.

Emergency Protocols

Immediate danger

  • If something happens and you think you, others, or the building is in immediate danger do not hesitate to call 911 and activate the building alarm while evacuating the building.

Chemical spills

  • Minor spills
  • Must meet the following requirements to be cleaned up by lab worker (from EH&S):
  • Chemical is known; can be cleaned in ≤10 to15 minutes
  • Employees are trained to clean up spills
  • Same PPE can be worn as in normal work activity
  • Clean-up supplies available (Spill Kit)
  • Major spills
  • Evacuate the area and call 911 for further instruction

PROCEDURE

  • Turn on oven by holding the power button down for 2 seconds. Allow oven to initialize.Once initialization has been completed, the display will light up and the current work space temperature will appear in the temperature display pane.
  • Press the menu button and press the right button to select the temperature icon and press the menu icon to confirm. In the temperature display pane, press right or left to adjust the temperature (long press speeds the reading up). Confirm with the menu button.
  • To set the timer to turn off, press the menu button and scroll using the right button to select the timer icon. Press menu to confirm. Ensure the word “OFF” appears and confirm with the menu button. Set the hours and minutes by using the left or right button to decrease and increase time, respectively. Confirm each by using the menu button. The timer icon will remain illuminated for the duration of the time.
  • To program aNEW heating or curing cycle press the menu button and scroll to the programming icon. Scroll with the right button to ‘New’, select any available program slot and confirm with the menu button. When prompted to enter the time of the first segment you may begin by selecting a “ramp” time using the left and right buttons and confirming with the menu button. You will then be prompted for your starting temperature. Upon confirming with the menu button you will confirm the “Next” selection if you would like to add another segment of time to your program. Repeat steps to select time and temperature of next segment. When you have completed your program instead of selecting “Next” you may select “Save”. Your program has now been saved.
  • To delete or edit a program press the menu button and scroll to the programming icon. Scroll with the right button to ‘Delete’ or ‘Edit’, select the program slot and confirm with the menu button.
  • To power off the oven, hold the power button for two seconds.
