Purpose / This is a theoretical unit standard for people who want to develop some specialist knowledge in cleaning a range of surfaces.
People credited with this standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: types of floors with special surfaces; methods and agents used for cleaning floors with special surfaces; methods of sealing floors with special surfaces; and maintenance programmes for floors with special surfaces.

1Competence demonstrated during assessment against this standard must comply with the requirements of:

2Definitions

Resilient floors include wood or particle board, resin, thermoplastic, Polyvinyl chloride (PVC), linoleum, marmoleum, rubber.

Non-resilient floors include concrete, granolithic, terrazzo, marble, brick, stone, quarry tile, asphalt, slate, ceramic tiles.

Outcomes and performance criteria

Outcome 1

Demonstrate knowledge of types of floors with special surfaces.

Performance criteria

1.1Non-resilient surfaces are identified according to their composition.

Rangeconcrete, granolithic, terrazzo, marble, brick, stone, quarry tile, asphalt, slate, ceramic tile.

1.2Resilient surfaces are identified according to their composition.

Rangewood or particle board, resin, thermoplastic, PVC, linoleum, marmoleum, rubber.

Outcome 2

Demonstrate knowledge of methods and agents used for cleaning floors with special surfaces.

Performance criteria

2.1Methods and agents used for cleaning non-resilient surfaces are described according to the composition of the floor.

2.2Methods and agents used for cleaning resilient surfaces are described according to the composition of the floor.

Outcome 3

Demonstrate knowledge of methods of sealing floors with special surfaces.

Performance criteria

3.1Methods of sealing non-resilient floors are described according to their composition.

3.2Methods of sealing resilient floors are described according to their composition.

Outcome 4

Demonstrate knowledge of maintenance programmes for floors with special surfaces.

Performance criteria

4.1Maintenance requirements for non-resilient floors are described in terms of composition of floor.

4.2Maintenance requirements for resilient floors are described according to composition of floor.
