Video Title:Los Reyes Magos

(“The Three Kings”)

1.LIVING ROOM, LATE AT NIGHT, ON THE EVE OF THE DAY OF THE EPIPHANY

CHARACTERS:

ANA:16 years old, Spanish student
(Spain/girl)

LUIS:16 years old Chilean – exchange
student staying at Ana’s house in Spain

ANA AND LUIS, SITTING, chatting before going to bed after returning from the “Three Kings Parade”

1ANA:

What did you think about the way that we celebrate the Three Kings in Spain?

2LUIS:

I liked it very much. I enjoyed the parade and the children picking up the lollies they were throwing from the floats. Their parents looked very happy too. I also enjoyed the songs being played.

3ANA:

Oh…! You’re talking about the “Villancicos” (Christmas Carols), aren’t you?

4LUIS:

Yes! We celebrate it in a different way.

5ANA:

So, I imagine that the “Three Kings” don’t bring you gifts the next morning.

6LUIS:

No, in Chile we don’t celebrate this day.

7ANA:

So, when do you get your gifts?

8LUIS:

Well… we get our gifts on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus brings his sack full of gifts and places them under the Christmas tree. You can imagine, the children don’t get much sleep waiting for that big moment.

9ANA:

Well it’s not so different. But for us it’s the “Three Kings” who place the gifts under the Christmas tree, or near the Nativity crib. Here many parents leave the presents for the little ones on Christmas Eve so they can enjoy the gifts during the holidays.

10ANA:

Anyway, we should go to bed now, otherwise, the Three Kings might miss us…

11LUIS

Yes… I’m tired too. Good night.

12ANA

And good night to you too!

SCENE 2.EARLY THE NEXT MORNING. THE DAY OF THE EPIPHANY, 6TH OF JANUARY. IN THE LIVING ROOM

Ana comes into the living room. Luis is already there, talking to Ana’s father who is sitting with a newspaper on his lap.

13Ana

Good morning Dad! Good morning Luis!

13bLuis

Good morning!

14FATHER:

Good morning! Did you sleep well?

15ANA:

Very well Dad! Last night Luis and I went to see the Parade of the Three Kings.

16FATHER:

Fantastic! So, what did you think, Luis?

17LUIS:

I liked it very much. The streets were crowded and the floats were beautifully decorated. It was like a big carnival.

18FATHER:

It’s a carnival for young and old. I remember when Ana was very little and wanted to climb up on all the floats. There was no one who could stop her.

19ANA:

That was long time ago and Luis doesn’t really care.

20LUIS:

No..no.. it sounds funny! Tell me! Tell me!

21FATHER:

Well…When Ana’s mother and I went to bed, Ana would get up and tiptoe out of her room to spy on the arrival of the “Three Kings” . She would keep going backwards and forwards to where the shiny shoes had been placed, to check if the gifts were there.

22LUIS:

Um… She was a naughty girl…!

23FATHER:

Well no… Just like all children.

24ANA:

Yes. Until one day I caught them out.

25LUIS:

Who? The Three Kings?

26ANA:

No, silly, my father and mother!

27LUIS:

So, what did you do?

28ANA:

Well, at the beginning I was upset. It had all been a big lie. So I went back to my room and cried.

29FATHER:

Yes. In the morning she didn’t want to listen to us. Her mother and I understood what had happened, so we had to explain it all. But she didn’t want to listen. She finally accepted it.

30FATHER:

Why don’t we go and see if the “Three Kings” have arrived.

31ANA:

Dad…! We’re not children anymore!

Ana's dad walks towards the christmas tree, where the nativity crib is placed. The christmas tree has been decorated with the same decorations as the previous year. Ana follows him. Under the christmas tree there are three nicely wrapped gifts. Every gift has a gift tag. Ana rushes over and grabs the gifts and reads out the names on the tags.

32ANA:

This one is for me... Wow! And this one must be yours: ‘For the most beautiful dad in the world’. And there’s one for you, Luis.

33Father:

Thank you!

34LUIS:

For me? Why?

35FATHER:

Because you’ve probably behaved well this year.

36LUIS:

Who? me?

TheY start opening their gifts quickly...the father is the first one to open his.

37FATHER:

Wow! How nice! A Rolling Stones CD! Thanks very much, Ana! And what about your gift? Aren’t you going to open it?

Ana finishes unwrapping her gift – which she opens carefully. She shows disapproval. Inside the box, theRE’s a large lump of charcoal.

38LUIS:

What’s that?

39ANA:

This?Well, this is a lump of charcoal. Do you want to try it?

40LUIS:

Charcoal...! No way!..Yuk!

41ANA:

Don't worry. It's a sweet charcoal. When children don't behave during the year, the Three Kings leave a piece of charcoal in their shoes, instead of the gift they asked for.

42LUIS:

Didn’t you behave?

ANA’S FATHER LOOKS AT THEM SMIRKING/LOOKING SATISFIED WITH HIMSELF

43Anna:

I don't know how he found out that I failed two subjects. Someone must have told him.

Ana turns around to look directly at her dad. HE is laughing loudly. He bends down behind the sofa and PICKS UP another gift.

44FATHER:

Look! There’s another present here Ana.

45ANA:

Give it to me... you’re worse than a child.

Ana opens her second gift happily... and finds an i-pod.

46ANA:

Wow! How beautiful. It's an “iPod”! Thanks, dad!

Ana grabs her dad EXCITEDLY. THEY hug and KISS.

47LUIS:

Lucky you!

48ANA:

Come on! Aren’t you going to open your gift?

49LUIS:

Wow! How silly of me! I'd forgotten! Great! It's a CD... thank you. “What a lovely gesture from the Three Kings”.

50FATHER:

It’s “Magos”, not “Majos”!

51LUIS:

It is! Well, I don’t know how to repay you.

52FATHER:

Who?

53FATHER:

Ok ... Why don’t we go into the kitchen and have some breakfast, some “Roscon”.

54LUIS:

Pardon! Some what?

55ANA:

“The Roscon de Reyes”.

56ANA:

You see. My father enjoys cooking. He doesn’t buy his cake from the bakery. He bakes it himself.

57LUIS:

Wow! A cake...? How nice...!

58ANA:

How nice! You'll see when you have a piece.

59FATHER:

The only thing is that you have to choose your piece of cake very carefully because there’s a small surprise inside.

60Luis

What happens?

61ANA:

Who ever gets that piece will have all his wishes come true that year.

62LUIS:

Great! Your Christmas is full of nice surprises.

63ANA:

Well, yes...!

64FATHER:

Do you like hot chocolate, Luis?

65LUIS:

Yes! I love it!

father serves the chocolate as Ana invites Luis to BE THE FIRST TO cut the cake.

66FATHER

Why don’t you cut yourself a piece?

(AS LUIS CUTS THE CAKEThe knife Gets stuck. Luis looks AT the piece of CAKE and sees a small coin).

67LUIS:

What’s this!

68ANA:

Look, Dad! How lucky! The prize!

69FATHER:

Wow! Great! Did you make your wish? Who knows? You might find the girl of your dreams in Spain.

70ANA:

Dad... Please...!
