NEW BUSINESS
Winter sports:
Cheerleading – Sports Rep Janet Delatte – no report
Wrestling – Sports Rep Cara Smith
The wrestling team hosted the Sectionals semifinals here at DV on Feb. 13th. The match came down to the last bout, where a win by Alex Niemann gave the Terriers a 1 point win over visiting Raritan. They traveled to Long Branch for the Sectionals Finals on Friday evening, where they lost a close match to the #1 seed.
The Districts were held at Hunterdon Central the following week. Two wrestlers were Champions: Mike Pongracz at 126 lbs. and Kody Eichlin at 160 lbs. Brian Baehr finished in second place in the 220lb weight class and Matt Gilmore at 132lbs and Marek Tomanek at HWT took third place finishes.
Those 5 wrestlers competed in the Regions where both Marek Tomanek and Kody Eichlin finished in 4th place. Mike Pongracz finished 1st for his second Region title which earned him a trip to the NJ State Championships held this past weekend in Atlantic City. Mike went 4-2 in AC to earn 5th place in NJ at 126 lbs. He finished this season with a record of 35-2 and his Del Val career with a record of 148-16. His career wins ranks him #1 in both Del Val and Hunterdon-Warren history.
Kody Eichlin was named Athlete of the Month for January and he was acknowledged at the recent BOE meeting. Also being recognized that evening was Coach Fitz on achieving his 100th career win which came in the exciting win over Raritan.
19 wrestlers made Honor Roll for the 2nd marking period.
The team will be celebrating the successes of the season at an end of year banquet on March 22nd.
The Wrestling Foundation is selling tickets for its annual raffle. The drawing will be held at Milford Fire on April 13th. Tickets are $20 with cash prizes. Tickets can be purchased from Coach Fitz.
Boys Basketball – Sports Rep Sandy DelGreco
Varsity finished their season with17 wins and 8 losses. They made it to the state game in Holmdel but lost.
J/V finished with 13 wins and 4 losses
Freshmen finished with 7 wins and 8 losses
Girls Basketball – Sports Rep Cathy Ferraro
The Girls Varsity Basketball Team finished an awesome season with a record of 23-4. The girls played one of their best seasons and gained many accomplishments.
Freshman ended the season with a record of 5 – 6.
JV ended the season with a record of 14-5.
As reported early in January the girls won the Hillsborough Christmas Tournament. This was the 5th year in a row that they have won this tournament.
On January 8th the girls held their second Jr Terrier Night where they invited all of the younger girls to come out and watch the team play. They hosted Bernards that night & won the game 60-34.
All 3 levels participated in the 2nd annual “Pink Out for Breast Cancer Night” on February 12th with all proceeds going to the Mama Mare Breast Cancer Foundation. The girls played Belvidere for that game and beat them 69-42. It was a great night for all and the girls were able to raise $1100.
On February 20th the girls played Bound Brook and won 67 – 20. This marked Coach Capone’s 100th win.
The girls ended their regular season as Skyland Conference Valley Division Champions with an undefeated record of 16-0. We believe that this is the first time in Del Val history that the girls team has won a conference with an undefeated record.
In the Hunterdon/Warren/Sussex tournament the girls made it to the third round. They beat Sparta 59-47 in the first round at Del Val. In the second round the girls traveled to Newton and came home with a 45-40 win despite playing against the much larger team. The third round had them facing Phillipsburg for the 3rd time this season and they lost 55-71 which ended their tournament run.
The girls were seeded second in the NJISSA tournament. The played their first game home at Del Val against Carteret which they won 42 - 30. They went on to play the second game against Manasquan. Once again the Manasquan team outsized our girls with the majority of the girls being 5’9” – 6’3”. Despite the loss, the girls played one of their best games of the season.
And finally we just received the best news yet for the girls. Coach Capone received word today that the Del Val Girls Basketball team has been chosen as “Team of the Year” by The Courier News for all schools in their distribution area. It will be announced in the paper one day next week with a story. This is quite the honor for the girls and once again we believe that it has not been given to any other Del Val team that we are aware of. Jeff Capone said that it is a first for basketball. So it is a great way to end the girls awesome season.
