Stage 5 | Science | Tech Heads

Current Innovation Task

Assessment For Learning

Content being addressed

WS9a)selecting and using in presentations, for different purposes and contexts, appropriate text types including discussions, explanations, expositions, procedures, recounts or reports

PW1e)relate the properties of different types of radiation in the electromagnetic spectrum to their uses in every life, including communication technology

ES2d)describe how some technological developments have increased scientific understanding of global patterns in geological activity, including in the Asia-Pacific region

LW3e)describe, using examples, how developments in technology have advanced biological understanding, e.g. vaccines, biotechnology, stem-cell research and in-vitro fertilisation

LW3f)discuss some advantages and disadvantages of the use and applications of biotechnology, including social and ethical considerations

CW1d)identify that natural radioactivity arises from the decay of nuclei in atoms, releasing particles and energy

CW1e)evaluate the benefits and problems associated with medical and industrial uses of nuclear energy

Your Task

In your groups you are to research innovations in your selected area of science (Radioactivity in medicine and industry, Communication Technology, Geological Activity or Biotechnology), and then develop and teach a 10 minute lesson to the class.

Your peers will assess your lesson and provide you with feedback, as will your teacher.

Your mini lesson should follow these guidelines:

  • A section where you teach your peers about your area of research and the scientific content involved
  • Provide peers with a resource that they can take away and keep, e.g. a Power Point, Word Document, FlipBoard magazine, A mock twitter feed, a video you have made, a curated YouTube channel etc.
  • Time for questioning by your peers
  • A bibliography of resources used

Success Criteria

Area / Criteria
Lesson Content / Content is clear, concise and informative. The innovations and technologies are discussed in detail.
Communication / The 10 minute lesson presented follows a logical format, uses appropriate language for the audience and is presented in a suitable format.
Resource / The resource created compliments the presentation and provides students with accurate information to take away
Secondary Sources / Bibliography includes variety of relevant secondary sources

Peer Feedback to Students

Please circle which of the following criteria best matches the presentation in each area.
