The Fourth Sunday of Lent

1 Samuel 16: 1b, 6-7, 10-13a: The Lord sent Samuel to Bethlehem to the house of Jesse, where Samuel was to anoint the new king of Israel. After Jesse presented each of his sons, the Lord instructed Samuel to anoint the youngest, David.

Psalm 23: 1-3a, 3b-4, 5, 6: "The Lord is my shepherd, there is nothing I shall want.

Ephesians 5: 8-14: Live as children of the light in goodness, justice and truth. "Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light."

John 9: 1-41: Jesus cured a man born blind. The Pharisees became upset because he did this on the Sabbath. After the Pharisees rejected the man's story, he met Jesus again. Jesus, "Son of Man", explained how the blind will see, but those who hold on to sin will remain in darkness.

Third Sunday of Lent

What an opportunity we have to drink from the well-spring of eternal life. Jesus! Most especially during this Privileged Season, when we, in the midst of our Lenten resolutions are looking for strength and nourishment, we thirst for Jesus, we long for Jesus to help us on our journey that leads to healing and reconciliation. For almost three weeks we have recalled the dryness our sinfulness causes and have struggled to climb the mountain of holiness where glory awaits. But we need help; we need guidance; we need encouragement. The Lord gives us what we need, and in today's gospel (John 4:5-42) we hear the invitation of Jesus to come and participate in His satisfying solace with all of our sins and drink from His abundant love and mercy. As we continue along this Lenten Season, journeying toward the Father with Jesus, let us not become frustrated and lost because of what we have given up but be encouraged and joyful for the gifts we receive when we come to Him in humility, seeking His forgiveness and merciful love.

There are two opportunities for participation in a Communal Penance Service for Lent this week: Monday, March 20th at St. Joseph Church, Palmyra and Tuesday, March 21st at Holy Family Church, Hannibal. Both services begin at 7:00 p.m..

Beginning at 12:00 noon on Friday, March 31st and continuing to 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 1st, "Twenty-Four Hours With The Lord" will be offered at Holy Rosary Church. It will begin with Solemn Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 12:00 noon in the church followed by the Sacrament of Reconciliation from 12:00 noon to midnight on March 31st and from 3:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 1st. This special opportunity for Adoration and Reconciliation will conclude with Benediction and Reposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament at 12:00 noon on Saturday, April 1st. Priests throughout the Hannibal Deanery are availing themselves to give everyone an opportunity for individual Confession and Absolution. There wil be no Confessions held Saturday afternoon, April 1st from 4:30-5:00 p.m..
