Department :St Padarn’s Institute

Context :St Padarn’s Institute provides the full range of Christian theological education and training for the Church in Wales and also within an ecumenical context. This includes education and training both for recognised lay and ordained ministries and for discipleship, as well as the provincial element of any strategy for ministerial development.

Responsible To:Ministry Bishop / Provincial Secretary

Responsible For:Overall responsibility for all the work of St Padarn’s Institute:

  • Directing, inspiring, motivating, engaging and challenging St Padarn’s Institute staff to deliver to the highest quality standards.
  • ensuring the efficient and effective development and delivery of ministerial and discipleship training according to a provincial strategy set by the St Padarn’s Institute Council.
  • developing new initiatives to promote specialised ministries including youth, pioneer, family, evangelists etc.
  • promoting and marketing the Church in Wales Development Programme to sister churches in the Anglican Communion and ecumenical partners.

Working with:A wide range of contacts, both internal and external including St Padarn’s Institute Colleagues, Diocesan and Provincial contacts, students, ecumenical partners and external Higher Education and Church partners.

Main Tasks & Responsibilities

  • To act as Principal Advisor to the St Padarn’s InstituteCouncil.
  • To be a key point of contact on all training matters for the Province.
  • To lead and manage the staff team of St. Padarn’s Institute.
  • To take overall responsibility for the validation of the programmes and for maintainingworking relationships with Higher Education partners.
  • To take overall responsibility for the relationship with the Church of England Ministry Division
  • To take overall responsibility for maintaining relationships with network partners both Diocesan and Provincial and ecumenical.
  • To ensure the delivery of strategies set by the St Padarn’s Institute Council.
  • To ensure a flexible approach within strategies set by the Institute to achieve the multiple demands upon the training systems.
  • To take overall responsibility for the maintenance and further development of the spiritual, community and academic life of the training institution as a whole and for the well being of staff and students.
  • To take overall responsibility for developing and maintaining an effective financial strategy for the TEI.
  • To be responsible for the management of risk within the Institute
  • To have oversight of the detailed forecasts, budgets and accounts for the TEI.
  • To contribute to education and training as appropriate
  • To promote the cultural and bilingual needs of the communities which the Church in Wales serves

Staff

  • Responsible for the individual and collective pastoral care of all TEI staff and for their leadership, management and deployment and ongoing professional development.
  • Responsible for ensuring that proper arrangements are in place for staff appraisal and development.
  • Directly involved in the preparation of job descriptions and the processes relating to all staff appointments to the TEI.

Development/Implementation

  • To lead the Training Institute Senior Staff Team.
  • To drive the development of the Training Strategy and Learning and Development programmes for the Church in Wales
  • To liaise closely with partners regarding the delivery of the Programmes
  • To ensure the training objectives are met
  • To ensure there are effectivemarketing, promotion and publicity for the Training Strategy and Programmes.
  • To ensure that the delivery of training is appropriate in line with personal skill and specialism
  • To advise in amending and revising programmes as necessary, in order to adapt to changes occurring in the work of the Church.
  • To work with colleagues to identify and address training needs (both lay and clerical) associated with the development of Ministry Areas.

Team working and Information

  • To lead the TEI Senior Staff Team Meetings
  • To manage senior staff of the TEI, including the Dean of Quality Assurance.
  • To establish and promote effective channels of communication and feedback within the TEI.
  • To analyse statistics and provide regular reports.
  • To monitor the costs of planned programmes and keep within budgets.

External Affairs

  • Ensure the timely production of reports and papers for Governing Body and deliver at G.B.
  • Present feedback/ progress reports for each meeting of the TEI Council as the Principal Advisor responsible for co-ordinating meetings etc.

Validation and Quality

  • Develop a culture of respect for quality throughout the TEI which promotes, develops and maintains quality standards.
  • Oversight and support of the Quality Assurance function
  • Accountable for continuous improvement.
  • Overall responsibility for managing relationships and agreements with relevant Universities in Wales.
  • Responsible for submitting validation requests in a timely and appropriate manner

Other duties

  • Ensure Equal Opportunities and good practice generally
  • Keep up to date with developments in training by reading relevant journals, going to meetings and attending relevant courses
  • Having an understanding of e-learning techniques, and where relevant, being involved in the creation and/or delivery of e-learning packages;
  • Contribute to the delivery of programmes as appropriate

Person Specification.

Educational:

  • A practical theology led approach to ministerial and theological education and training.
  • Experience of delivering education (preferably in a Higher Education context)
  • A postgraduate qualification in Theology, Religious Studies, or a related area (at least a masters degree and preferably a PhD)
  • A higher education teaching qualification, or appropriate membership of the Higher Education Academy, or the willingness and ability to work for one of these;
  • A commitment to ongoing professional development and scholarship.

Skills/aptitudes:

Knowledge/Experience:

  • A good understanding of the organisation of the Church in Wales, training structures and governance.
  • Awareness of the opportunities and challenges facing the Church in theological education with regard to developing patterns of ministry and mission.
  • Experience of developing and delivering modules on ministry programmes which show a high level of integration of information and ministerial formation.
  • Knowledge of HE academic procedures
  • Experience networking with others locally and provincially.

Ministerial:

  • Evidence of a personal leadership style which is accessible and approachable, reflects pastoral strength, and can handle diversity and conflict
  • Show experience of ministry with evidence of responsibility, ideally within a theological training institution
  • Evidence of theologically grounded involvement in teams and groups both as a member and as a leader.

  • Demonstrate commitment to the Christian vision, ethos and values which underpin the day-to-day and long-term development of the Church.
