Property Work Day

Saturday morning – June 15th at 8:30 AM

There are many small jobs that are not covered by our cleaning crew or our outside contractors because of the added expense. This is where we, as parishioners, can help defray the cost of maintaining our building by sharing our time and talents.

Help for an hour, two hours, or more, but come and enjoy the fun and fellowship of working together. Bring your favorite scrub brush, hammer and screwdrivers, or paintbrush!

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Scott Watterson at (609) 818-0918.

June Book Club Selection – The Round House

The Round House, the 2012 National Book Award Winner for Fiction is a powerful coming-of-age story, a mystery, and a tender, moving novel of family, history, and culture. It is an exquisitely told story of a boy on the cusp of manhood who seeks justice and understanding in the wake of a terrible crime that upends and forever transforms his family.

We will meet in the Parish Library at 7:30pm on Thursday, June 20th. For more information call Holly Weise at 609-737-1064

Kairos

Our Kairos church school year will come to an end on Sunday, June 2nd. This will be the last Sunday of classes before Kairos takes a summer break. This will also be a day of appreciation for and celebration of our wonderful teachers and staff. All grades will begin in their classrooms that morning and will then join the congregation for the media presentation and teacher recognition. We hope you will be in attendance as we take a fond look back at our year with your children and the wonderful people who make this program possible. Please join us after the 10am service for a Kairos Make Your Own Sundae Coffee Hour!

Thank you most sincerely for your dedicated and years of service to the children of St Matthew’s. Your presence will be missed.

Thank you Mick Jones, our gifted Kairos photographer, for once again capturing the spirit of our children and our ministry in photograph.

We also express our gratitude to Brenda McNeil, our Nursery Care Program Coordinator, and our wonderful caregivers: Danny Cooper, Thomas Sherman, Abby Watterson and Emily Whitaker for creating a safe and enjoyable place for our littlest Episcopalians to spend their Sunday mornings. We wish our seniors Danny and Emily, love and best wishes and great success as they move on to pursue their college careers.

Many blessings and a heartfelt thank you to all of our Feast Bread Bakers! It is through their loving dedication to this ministry that our youngest Episcopalians are able to join in celebrating the breaking of the bread: Carol Flanders, Susan Kleinschmidt, Tara McCullough, Jenn Miller, Denny Rogers, Katie Roy and Cheryl Watterson

Getting to Know You: The Lorenz Family

Most parishioners are already acquainted with the Lorenz family. They are known for squeezing into pews that cannot accommodate all six of them. Rather than split up, they prefer to sit on each other’s laps until the Peace, or a quiet riot is exchanged! Ten years ago, when they first arrived at St. Matthew’s, pew space was not a challenge, although keeping everyone seated in the pew certainly was! Fred and Lynn have 15 year-old triplets, Jeff, Drew, and Karlie, as well as a 13 year-old daughter, Brooke. They also have two Westies named Quinny and Rudy.

Fred and Lynn often joke and claim that Norman Rockwell inspired them to move to Pennington (from Skillman, NJ). In recalling the “everyday life” scenarios he depicted in his paintings, Pennington seemed like a Norman Rockwell town. It offered just about everything one could find in his famous works of art; a barber shop, hardware store, ice cream parlor, baseball fields, sidewalks to ride bikes, a quaint brick grammar school, and a great place to catch frogs. Most impressive was the mailman who delivered mail by foot and, of course, the Episcopal church on the corner of Main Street!

Since becoming members of St. Matthew’s, the Lorenz family has been very involved in church activities and volunteer opportunities. Lynn has served on the Long Range Planning Committee, Vestry, chair of Destinations, co-chaired church auctions, designed and maintains the new church website, involved in mission trips, and has lost track of how many years she has been chair of the Communications Committee. Fred has had his hands in various smaller projects, and the children have been involved with Destinations, Logos, rummage sales, fund raising efforts for the Battle Against Hunger, Urban Promise, Urban Promise Boat Works, and a mission trip to Camden. They claim that their last trip to Camden was one of the best weeks they have ever had and are very excited about another visit this summer.

When not setting up tables for a rummage sale or running for coffee rolls for coffee hour, Fred is a financial advisor at Merrill Lynch and has been with the company for thirty years. Lynn worked as an accountant for Johnson & Johnson before starting an online business (JustMultiples.com) in 2003.

The Lorenz’s enjoy spending time on Long Beach Island where they swim, fish, sail, sun bathe, veg-out, and eat bagels and crumb buns. They also love to travel, but have been limited to Pennington and it’s surrounding towns of late. Lynn’s oversized Yukon XL can often be seen circling the streets as she runs four teenagers around.

The Lorenz family has grown in so many ways since their first visit to St. Matthew’s and surprisingly, their physical growth is the least significant. Fred and Lynn credit St. Matthew’s for its “positive and profound” influence on them and their children. “St. Matthew’s has been a ‘third parent’ in leading our children in their spiritual and emotional growth. We could not have done this alone. We are so thankful for our church and all it has to offer. St. Matthew’s is an extension of our family.” Thanks be to God!
