Wednesday, 15th July – 6.30 pm- Evening performance

As in previous years, we urge you not to bring pre-school children to the actual performances, in order to minimise any disruption to our young performers. Every family is guaranteed a minimum of 2 tickets. Further details will follow.

School Drop Off/Pick Up - Please can we urge parents to drive and park appropriately when dropping off their children at school in a morning, and picking up at the end of the school day. There has been an incident of someone reversing their car along Stonehouse Road where children were crossing, putting the children in a dangerous situation. Please use the free car park opposite the Leisure Centre and walk your child the short distance to school. This way the children’s safety would not be put at risk. Thank you.

Play Equipment – We are absolutely delighted with the new play equipment at the front of the school which the children use whilst under the supervision of staff members. Children sometimes enjoy going on the equipment before and after school as it is a lovely resource for them. However, can we please remind parents that if their child uses the play equipment they must be supervised at all times. Thank you.

Sports Kit – There have been a number of children who have missed out on PE lessons so far this term because of not having correct kit in school. Where possible we try to find spare kit. However, the spare kit we have available is limited and we do not necessarily have the correct sizes. It really is important that children bring the correct PE kit to school so that they can participate. As a school, we promote healthy lifestyles and active participation in school sport is a key part of this. The correct PE kit comprises of Royal Blue Shorts; White T-shirt; Trainers (KS2) and a Tracksuit (for the winter months).

Volunteers – We are blessed with lots of volunteers in school, who are parents, grandparents or members of the community. We really value the support they provide and it makes a real difference to the children’s learning and progress, especially when parents support with listening to read. It really helps the teachers to plan effectively if they know that regular support can be relied upon and volunteers can commit to regular time slots. If you feel you may be able to support in the classroom on a regular basis then please contact the class teacher or the school office.

Parent Task Team –I have an external adviser, Angela Thompson, coming in on the morning of Monday, 6th July to work with parents who want to get more practically involved in supporting and improving the school. Angela Thompson came into school just before the Easter holidays and did some training on how the school engaged with parents, some of whom she met that day. This is a follow up to that session. Pleasenote this is not the Parent Support Group, which is a fundraising team. We are really keen to work with parents to improve this school. If any parents are interested to attend this session please complete the reply slip at the end of this Newsletter and return it to the school office.

Support with Reading – At St Mary’s we really like to celebrate books and reading because this skill is key to achievement in all subjects and makes a great difference to children’s future life chances. In order to progress with reading, it is essential for children to read with an adult on a regular basis and for them to develop a love of books. Therefore, we would like to remind parents how important it is to hear their children read on a regular basis and to record this in the children’s reading diaries for the teacher’s attention. We have examples of children making sudden and rapid reading progress when they’ve had some more support from home. If you would like advice on how to support your child’s reading, please ask the child’s teacher. We shall be asking the parent Task Team help us to develop ideas to support children with reading at home. Next reading cafés will be in the autumn term and we hope to see you there!
