GAP STUDENT

JOB DESCRIPTION

Responsible to: Mr Peter Bieneman – Director of Boarding

Mrs Sharon Exelby - Personnel Officer

Harrow School was founded in 1572 by John Lyon under a charter by Queen Elizabeth. The School has about 820 boarders who live in 12 Houses. The School is set on Harrow on the Hill over approximately 300 acres. It has an academic staff of about 100 and a support staff of over 300.

Although Harrow boys are only at school for 36 weeks a year the School operates for 52 weeks per year and has a business department which runs Easter revision courses and Summer Schools for students from all over the world.

Gap students are assigned to a boarding house so that they are able to participate in House functions and gain an insight into the boarding life at Harrow.

We have recently welcomed Gap students from Australia, New Zealand, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Harrow School currently takes 4 students per year. The student should be interested in learning about British culture and should wish to become involved in the activities of the School.

Visa Requirements Changes in Entry Visa requirements in 2009 now mean that applicants from South Africa and Zimbabwe can only be accepted if they can obtain an ancestral visa or hold an EU passport.

The qualities we are looking for in our Gap students are:

·  Friendly

·  Enthusiastic

·  Willing to learn

·  Willing to take on responsibility under supervision.

·  Adaptable

·  Self confident

·  Outgoing

·  Interested in integration into school life

·  Very strong sporting interests, especially Rugby and Cricket

·  In good health

In addition we are looking for each of our Gap students to coach major team games such as cricket, rugby and hockey/soccer. Gap students would be expected to have reached an advanced level of competence in two of these games (school first team standard preferred). The ability to use IT and to work with computers would be beneficial.

Gap students are currently assigned on a rota basis to the School Office, Sports Hall (Life Saving), School Office and Information Technology. The student will work in one or two of these departments during the mornings and help with the coaching of sport in the afternoons and will be involved in matches on Saturdays.

The programme for 2014 has not been fixed and there may be opportunities in other departments such as Ryan Theatre, Vaughan Library, Gardening and Grounds. In School Holidays it may be possible to gain employment with Harrow School Enterprises Limited that run academic and other activities. If you have a lifeguarding qualification then you may be able to cover some sessions at weekends for additional payment.

Gap students are required to assist with sports coaching and Shell PE in all three terms. Your usual commitment will involve four afternoons from Monday to Friday and taking a School team for a Saturday match. If the match is away you may not return to Harrow until 9pm.
