Transfiguration, Year A 6 August 2017

Not Just A Prophet
If a character in a film or novel unexpectedly reveals themselves to be someone other than first depicted, the whole storyline can change quickly and dramatically. This is what happened when Jesus is transfigured before his three disciples. As St Matthew recounts, Peter, James and his brother John are completely flummoxed by seeing Jesus talking with Moses and Elijah, with the sudden explosion of light around Jesus. Almost incoherent in their response, the disciples were blubbering about building three ‘tents’ to mark the event. The bright cloud cuts them off as if they were talking nonsense, and the voice proclaims that Jesus is God’s beloved Son to whom we must listen. In this sudden unveiling of Jesus’ true identity and his relationship with the Father, Jesus changes the plot dramatically, telling them that the Son of man will die, but then rise from the dead. No wonder the disciples were bamboozled. But Matthew is mainly writing from Jewish Christians, and his account is full of enormous resonances in Jewish traditions. Jesus is like Moses, going up a high mountain into the divine presence. The face of Moses was shining; and so with Jesus: his face was shining like the sun, and even his clothes. Moses was the founding figure in Jewish identity and religion. But why does Elijah appear in his vision? He was not regarded as the greatest prophet. However, recall that he was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot, and so did not die. The expectation was that he would return to announce the coming of the Messiah. Matthew has already pointed to Jesus saying that Elijah had already come in the person of John. When Matthew was writing, there was a belief in first century Judaism that Moses had also not died but been taken up to heaven. Though both Moses and Elijah were rejected by their people, they were vindicated by God. The message in Matthew is that Jesus, like them, will suffer and die, but God will vindicate him. Matthew saw Moses and Elijah as representing the entire Jewish tradition in recognising Jesus not just as another prophet, but as uniquely embodying God’s divine presence and will. No wonder the disciples were petrified. Then the vision is over and Jesus breaks the shock by touching them. Jesus is back to his normal self, and tells them to stand up but not in fear. Deeply shaken, they realised that Jesus was not just a prophet. Matthew’s account is a statement of faith about who Jesus is, and how his life and resurrection can be interpreted in the light of Jewish tradition and messianic hopes. The epistle of St Peter reiterates that this vision was not about ‘any cleverly invented myths’. ‘We heard this ourselves, spoken from heaven’, confirming the prophecies, and ‘lighting a way through the dark until the dawn comes and the morning star rises in your minds.’

DAY OF PRAYER FOR CARE AND RESPECT AT THE END OF LIFE

This Sunday 6th August 2017 is suggested by Archbishop Denis Hart to be a day of prayer as a response to the imminent vote in our State Parliament on Euthanasia and assisted suicide. It is expected the legislation will come before the Victorian Parliament very soon. While seeking a way out of terrible suffering is understandable, taking life in this way is, as Pope Francis describes it, “False Compassion”. “Instead” said the Pope, “we should be like the Good Samaritan, drawing near and accompanying the sick. Jesus asked Peter, James and John to accompany him in his hour of anguish as well as the moment when his glory was revealed”. In seeking to give the comfort of Christ to those who suffer, may we too share with them the glory of the transfigured and risen Lord. Please take for you at home a prayer card “Love to the End” available in the church narthex and near the side door.
