St. Andrew’s Upper Certamen Team Wins Third State Championship; Andrew Rist Makes History By Being Named Latin Student of the Year for Third Time

On Friday, April 1 and Saturday, April 2 the St. Andrew’s Upper School Latin Club attended the Texas State Junior Classical League Convention at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, Texas. The Upper certamen team composed of Tito Kohout, Allison Portnoy, Westlake’s Kyle Scheiffer, Captain Andrew Rist, alternates Alison Hight and Sarah Miller, and team manager Jenna Albert represented the Austin area in the competition and won the state championship. All of us who watched the final round were treated to a great round of certamen with the team dominating the competition.

Senior Andrew Rist, a member of the winning Upper certamen team, was named the Latin Student of the Year for the state of Texas for his high score on the most difficult test given, the Decathlon. The award comes along with a $1,500 scholarship. This is Andrew’s third year in a row to be named Latin Student of the Year. It is the first time in TSJCL history that a student has won the award three times.

Andrew Rist also achieved high scores on the Mythology and Pentathlon tests. Alison Hight won the trophy for the high score on the Latin Literature test.
