YALE Academy Policies

Spring View Middle School 2012-2013

Teachers: Haynes, Galimba, Onorato, & Naumann

We hope you enjoyed a relaxing summer and are ready to begin a productive year in school. In your classes this year, you will be developing writing, speaking, listening, reading, and critical thinking skills that you will demonstrate in a variety of ways.

Expectations

Be in your assigned seat with all required materials and completed assignments when class begins.

Sitquietly and wait for instructions.

Show kindness, courtesy, and respect to self, others, and property at all times.

Turn in your best, completed work on time.

Assignments

Students should spend 1½ to 2 hours on homework nightly. Even if there is not a specific homeworkassignment due the next day, this time can be filled with a variety of school-related activities (i.e. organizing binders, planning long-term projects, studying classroom notes and handouts, reviewing and previewing the assigned text, or reading independently). We strongly believe that students need a regular homework place and time and that developing good study habits now will serve them well in the future. Students will have a weekly calendar in the Student Planner/Student Handbook, where they will record assignments and due dates. Please note that calendars will also be posted on the school web site at Parents are strongly encouraged to review the weekly calendars with their child in order to be fully aware of class requirements.

In order to receive full credit:

a. Turn in complete, correct and neat work on time.

b. Include your name, date, class/period, and assignment title in the upperleft-hand corner.

Make-up Work

Absent students will receive full credit for make-up work completed within the time allowed.

It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make-up work. Check theon-line calendar, download any handouts

from the teachers’ websites and consult with a study partner. A teacherconsultation for help and clarification

is generally most effective outside of class time. Check with your teacher for an appropriate time, which may

be atbreak, lunch, before, or after school.

During an absence, it is strongly recommended for students to e-mail their teachers about missed work. If

absent for three or more days, work may be requested through the front office.

The teacher will decide an appropriate time and place for make-up assessments.

Assignments due on the first day of an absence will be due the day the student returns.

If an upcoming absence of fiveor more days is planned, an independent study contract from the office and

assignments from your teachers must be obtained and arranged in advance. Any help needed must also be

secured before leaving since work will be due immediately upon return, and,per district policy, extra time will

not be given. Teachers will need a minimum of two weeks notice to arrange an independent study contract.

Late Work

Late work, other than that due to an excused absence, will be accepted for partial credit. The only exception to this rule is regarding major assignments (i.e. essays, projects, presentations, etc.). These large assignments will be accepted late with a penalty of 10% for each day of lateness.

Academic Grades

Organization is the key to success; therefore, periodic binder and planner checks will be conducted. Students are expected to file all school paperwork in their school binders behind the appropriate subject dividers until otherwise instructed.

Grades are available on-line and are updated regularly. To access grades on-line, use your child’s 7-digit ID number as the password. Students and parents are strongly encouraged to check grades weekly.

Extra Credit

Extra credit does not and cannot replace regular curriculum. Teachers may occasionally offer an extra credit assignment, but students and parents should not expect that extra credit be given to make up for poor or missed work.

Disciplinary Issues

Follow all school rules and routines as outlined in the Student Handbook.

Regarding tardies, a warning is given for the first unexcused tardy per quarter. On the second unexcused

tardy, students will receive a behavior slip for each repeated offense.

When a student receives a behavior slip, he/she will be required to serve one half-hour Academy Detention

either before or after school per the Yale Academy Detention Schedule. The YaleAcademy Detention

Schedule is posted in each Yale Academy classroom. No merit loss occurs at this level.

The behavior slip must be signed by a parent before the detention may be served. This signed slip admits the

student to detention.

Failure to serve a detention withinthe time allottedwill result in a referral to the Assistant Principal, which

results in a 15-merit loss for defiance and three days of SVMS lunchtime detention.
