Spr.1.Wk.6-Spr.2.Wk.1.Winter Weatherland

Dear Family,

Children are naturally curious about everything in their world. For the next three weeks we will be tapping into that curiosity as we explore the nature of weather as well as the season of winter. The children will be asked to observe and describe the weather each day. Rainy, cloudy and windy conditions will be empathised. The children will begin to learn about the water cycle and about the sun’s role in weather conditions such as rain, snow and wind.

They’ll begin to understand, through the story On the same day in March, how the weather can be different on the same day in different places around the world. They’ll learn that some parts of earth have winter at the same time as other parts have summer.

Scientific investigations are essential in this theme. Some experiments include learning about water in its solid (ice) and liquid (water) states and effects of temperature n plant growth. Science and maths skills will grow as the children read a thermometer, record and graph the temperature and interpret the information they have gathered.

In the dramatic Play Lab the children’s oral language will grow as they enact various

weather scenarios or pretend to be weather reporters. The children will write about the weather and their experiments and make a big Book together. (Please come and read it later!) Of course, opportunities to paint, sculpt and make paper snowflakes will help the children express themselves creatively.

As always, books begin many of our discussions and fun. Some children will start on a new adventure in books next week. They’ll begin to read their own shared stories. Shared stories are little books with large print that help children learn to read.
