Need to Know" Rules for Badminton
Serving Rules and Regulations
- The server and receiver must stand within the serving and receiving court areas.
- All serves must be underhand with the hand below the shuttle at contact.
- All serves must go diagonally across the net into the opponent's service court.
- If in serving the server misses the shuttle, there is no penalty and the serve is taken over. However, if the shuttle is touched then it counts as an attempted serve and the service is awarded to the opponent.
- If a server's score is even (0, 2, 4, etc.) the server is o the right side of the court. If the server's score is odd (1, 3, 5, etc.) the server is on the left side of court.
- Each time a point is earned the server switches sides of the court to serve next
Boundaries
- For our purposes, the boundaries for singles and doubles are the singles court lines
Scoring
- Points can only be scored if you are the server.
- The shuttle must land within the specified boundaries.
- When playing flights (in our season), we will play the best two out of three games. Games will go to specified points or time.
Other Rules and Regulations
- The shuttle cannot be contacted until it has passed over the net. A player's stroke may however, follow through over the net.
- A player cannot touch any part of the net with the racquet or body.
- A player cannot hit the shuttle twice in succession.
- Any shuttle that lands on a line, whether a serve or during play, is good.
- If the shuttle is hit into the net and sticks it is a let and the serve and point are redone.
Badminton Etiquette
- All line calls should be made quickly and fairly
- If the shuttle comes in to your court, toss it back to court where it belongs or if across another court, set behind endline
- If your shuttle goes into another court, walk around the baseline to retrieve it
- Server is to call the score out loudly
- If there is an interference on a player’s side of the net, it is the player’s option to stop play and replay the point
- A player should compliment his or her opponent on a good point made
- A player should treat opponents as he or she would like to be treated
- Players should shake hands at the end of a match

SCOUTING THE BADMINTON COMPETITION
As we run a scrimmage with flights (fights 1 & 2, flights 3 & 4, flights 5 & 6) you will be analyzing the play of your opponents. Watch their games, note their habits, and ask yourself a series of questions that will help you play them "smarter".
Here are some questions you might want to start with, but feel free to create and answer your own.
- What are their strengths?
- What type of shots might they be vulnerable to?
- Where might you place your serve for each person?
- What will be your strategy for defeating them (push to back of court, drop shot into front of court, etc)
Your coach will guide you through discussion both before and after the scrimmage to assist you in preparing for your competition.
