Compeer Volunteer
Location: Canberra/Goulburn Archdiocese / Reports: Volunteers, Members
Division: Mental Health Services / Reports to: Director, Special Works
Position:
A Compeer Volunteer improves the quality of life and self-esteem of people by reducing isolation through social inclusion and activities. You participate in mutually agreed social activities includes watching a movie, chat over a coffee, walks, playing sport and Compeer social events. Training and ongoing support is offered to volunteers. Compeer volunteers are an adjunct to mental health professional treatment providing an important component of the recovery process. Compeer volunteers are not counsellors, caregivers or mental health support workers – what Compeer offers is friendship.
Key Responsibilities
  • Spend 4 hours (minimum) per month in social/recreational activities for a 12 month period
  • To follow Compeer and referring health professional guidelines and instructions
  • To return a monthly report to Compeer, participate in annual survey and feedback, as required
  • To attend compulsory trainings and peer support sessions, when practicable
  • Compliance with organisational policies and procedures, legislation, Work Health and Safety, environment and diversity and a commitment to quality systems and continuous improvement.

Selection Criteria
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Ability to be supportive, respectful and have empathy for people living with a mental health diagnosis
  • Ability to establish strong professional relationships
  • A high level of customer service skills
  • High level communication skills - written and verbal with a wide range of stakeholders
Personal Attributes:
  • High ethical standards, is trustworthy and confidential, works well individually and within a team
  • Consideration and respect for people living with a mental health diagnosis and their views and adapts to changing environments
  • Enthusiastic, projects a positive image, is efficient and effective
Work Health and Safety Requirements
  • Covered shoes to be worn at all times whilst onsite
  • Manual handling of up to fifteen (15) kilograms with lifting, bending, reaching up and down
  • Ladder and trolley usage (pushing and pulling movements)
  • If driving a Society vehicle, a valid driver’s license must be held and a copy provided

Volunteers may be required to have a National Criminal History Record Check and/or Working with Vulnerable People Check as a condition of volunteering, per legislation or Society requirements.
