Speller’s Choice

At the beginning of the week, all students will take a pretest using the A or B list words, depending on their spelling ability. Based on their pretest scores, students are assigned to the A or B list. Students with scores of 17/20 or better work will work on the next challenging list, which contains more difficult words. Students with scores of 16/20 or will continue working on the same list. On Friday or the last day of the week, students will take the final test of the week.

Each week you will be able to pick your study activities usingthe speller’s choice guide. You can record your work by typing or by writing by hand on notebook paper. You must turn in four activities each week.

  1. ABC Order – Write your words in alphabetical order.
  2. Spelling City - Go to the website There are a numberof free resources that you can use to practice your words. Once you type in your spelling words, you can play a few games with your words. When you are ready, you can even take a spelling test. If you have access to a printer, you can print a certificate or a report showing what words you missed on the spelling test.
  3. Reversed Words – Write your words in ABC order…backwards!
  4. Rainbow Words – Write each of your words in three or more colors.
  5. Say your Words –Cheer/say your words (spelling them!) to an adult. Write this activity on your paper and have your parent or another adult sign to say that they listened to you cheer/say your words.
  6. Backwards Words – Write your words forwards, then backwards!
  7. Silly Sentences – Use all of your words in ten sentences.
  8. Pyramid Words – Write your words adding one letter at a time. The result will be a pyramid shape of words.

  1. Story Words – Write a short story using all of your words.
  2. Secret Agent Words – Number the alphabet from 1 – 26 (A=1, B=2, C=3, and so on…), then change each of your words into its secret code number. Please make sure to give an answer key!
  1. Disappearing Words – Write each word, then write it again but leave one letter out, then write it again and leave two letters out, then three,…until your word has disappeared!

  1. Computer Fun – Use your computer to type your words – three times each. Use different fonts and make it look fun! Be sure to print it out!
  2. Crossword Puzzle– Make a crossword puzzle using all of your vocabulary words. Includeclues for each word and complete the puzzle. You may use puzzlemaker.com (choose “CrissCross”) or graph paper.
  3. Word Search– Make a word search puzzle using your spelling words. Use graph paper or

puzzlemaker.com. Then, find your words.

  1. Wordle– Go to wordle.net and create a word cloud using all of your spelling words. Try

playing around with the word cloud to make the most difficult words stand out.

  1. Draw and Label– Draw and label your spelling words. You must color your drawings.
  2. Bubble Letters– Write your spelling words in bubble letters. After you write your words inbubble letters, color your words with a crayon or colored pencil.
  3. Scrabble!– Draw each of your spelling words as Scrabble tiles. Then, calculate the point

value for each word.

  1. Sketches– Sketch a picture of each word and write a brief statement explaining how the

picture describes the word.

  1. Hidden Words– Draw and color a picture. Hide all your spelling words inside your picture.
  2. Rainbow Write– First write each word in pencil. Then trace over each word three times. Eachtime you trace, you must use a different color crayon. Be sure to write neatly.
  3. Cursive – Write your words in your best cursive handwriting.
  4. Vowels & Consonants – Write your words and highlight or circle the vowels
  5. Syllables – Divide your spelling words into syllables (ex. un/der/stand)
  6. Word Doctor – Write your spelling words. Underline the trickiest part of each word and for at least three of the words, write a sentence describing a trick you can use to remember the correct spelling.
  7. Practice Test – Have someone give you a practice test. Write each word you misspelled on your practice test five times. Make sure you get your test signed by your tester.
  8. Word Sorts – Sort your spelling words into at least two categories – syllables, parts of speech, vowel sounds, words you know / don’t know, etc.
  9. Sentences – Write a sentence for each word that shows you understand the meaning.
  10. Sound Boxes – break your spelling words into sounds parts / bites and then write the whole word.
