NHL Game clips top learn from

This clip is one of 3 related to Defensive team play prepared by Tim Bothwell who played 10 years in the NHL and has coached at the U of C and in the NHL as well as with the Women’s team at an Olympics. This clip shows the skills, tactics and thinking associated with Defensive play using NHL clips. From my experience I have seen players look at clips of excellent examples of skills, tactics and team play and “do it” on the ice. I do not believe we have to practice (use energy) as much as we do to accomplish better play. Video learning could be a tool to save time and develop better Hockey sense and performance.

Random

Small Area Practice- Progressive deliberate > Random practice improves Individual Skills and Hockey Sense. Skills are the foundation of tactics and team play. Building this type of skill practice into weekly practice plans is necessary at any level.
He uses "small area" practice and a Random approach which is proven to be
more effective than deliberate practice.

Pinching

I have asked a number of people what they think of this clip. I call it "To
Pinch or not to Pinch"?. This is one of the critical aspects of fore
checking, getting caught - and transition. Hopefully this tool will help
coaches help players to make better pinch decisions.

We advocate "only pinch on the far side' IN A 1-2-2 AND pinch both sides in
a 2-1-2 when F3 is high. After looking at this clip I like the pinch by the
D but now have to write in a new rule .
Transition

a learning clip. The clip is really about "Transition" which I believe is the "game within the game" and it shows how important thinking, 'luck or chance" and habits are at impacting the game.

I wonder how Mike Keenan thought about this play and how he reacted

(responded) as a coach to it; during the game, right after the game and the day after the game. How coaches respond to situations like this are part of the "art of coaching".

Change > stretch Something to be aware of.

O Zone 4check

Forecheck 1-2-2>2-1-2

This contains good clips of the system as well as angling and positioning.

These 2 links link is a good one o Forecheck where F1 and F2 pressure and support on 1 side to create a turnover and F3 slips into an opening a Goal and a pass and for a pass and scoring chance on the second link. Good read and React that the kids will learn from > “see and do”.

Goal scoring from the forecheck

Scoring chance from Forecheck

It shows the 1-2-2 >2-1-2 all in one system and it breaks down because the Forward (f3) who supports the D pinch also pinches and there is no high support so it results in a 2 on 1. One of the other forwards had to become the high forward and she stayed low to long. It is a great clip to see how the players have to read and react. I feel that the low forward - net zone had to move higher and become the high FW. She stood still to long.

Once a FW replaces the D they have to be 100% sure on the pinch or that is the risk of this system.

Motivation

This link reinforces the belief anyone can achieve whatever they want to achieve despite the odds. Never underestimate the ability or gifts of those that we are teaching or coaching.

"Teaching is not about how finding out how smart the student is, it is about finding out ... How the student "is smart". Make the most of their gifts.

Goal Scoring

Ryan Smith hangs out close to the net and often scores goals in the primary scoring area. He pays the price and has made a career doing it. Goalies, Defense and Forwards have to aware of the situation and the player.

Players can learn from this highlight. Develop good 2 way habits and play hard and smart in both ends of the rink.

Here is an E mail reply from a 10 year old player to their coaches Allan and his son Josh Andrews after reviewing 10 of Ovalchuck’s goals on You Tube.
The 10 year old players make comments on 10 of Kovalchuk’s goals in the attachment. Dallas’s response is a living example of using technology to develop players.
Allan has been doing innovative things in developing players for many years . Josh has recently completed a thesis on “Scoring” and many points in his thesis are reinforced by the players comments. This helps explain how coaching can affect a players development, especially when Sydney Crosby was one of those players they worked with many years ago.

Skating

Danielle Goyette trained with a speed skating coach and her forward stride is not an Ideal Hockey stride; however, it is an efficient and power full stride with power in her side push and excellent glide on the balance leg (for the next push). We are advocating that players learn to skate efficiently using Goyette as something to imitate. With the guys I call it 2 Neidermeyer Laps. He is a smooth (glider) skater. When they get the feel of a smooth stride we have them do 2 Crosby laps where they do not bring their heels together after a side push. They keep their blades close to the ice accelerating and constantly develop force with more of a wide track. We also have to teach them how to skate with a stick – 1 hand and two and then with pucks. The best players are faster with a puck than without it. WE are trying to get coaches to send them on technical laps between drills with a specific technical focus. When we started this in the women’s program it helped them a lot, now we have to get them to accelerate and skate all directions using acceleration and over speed skating to get to the next level..
I never thought of the stick on the crossover – we want their stick to be on the inside and their shoulders level as they develop power with a cross over and cross under using the whole bade to develop force. When we teach this and have the girls accelerate inside each blue line we have to stop them because they develop too much speed and could get hurt if they wipe out.

1. Danielle Goyette' skating video -= "See you and Do" Encourage coaches to share this link with their players and have them do technical laps which imitate the skating demonstrated by Danielle. Coaches often send players on

2 laps between drills which are conditioning laps and they do not reinforce proper skating technique. In our U18n curriculum we are trying to get coaches to use this link and work on ""skills between drills" by keeping a technical focus which allows the players to recover and do something which reinforces more efficient technique.

Players could work on this at public skating as well. Both the forward stride (speed skating style) and the crossovers are shown in the link.

Mistakes; get over it!

Here are 2 links on an Overtime goal that Boston allowed last night similar to our late second period goal. This clip is about "refocusing" after stuff happens. All players have to deal with mistakes. Players have to learn from their mistakes and get ready for the next face off to perform well.
I have added some academic information that I plan to use with players and coaches at all levels. This clip and yesterdays game like all games are real opportunities to learn.
