Purpose of Job / The post holder will work with the team leaders, colleagues and peer mentors in all aspects of service delivery. You will support service users build upon their recovery capital and navigating their treatment journeys, with the aim that service users are enabled to successfully complete treatment and sustain long term recovery.
The Recovery Champion post will provide the opportunity to build, develop skills and knowledge of working in the substance misuse field, while actively championing recovery, using your own skills and experiences to bring added value to the role.
As a Recovery Champion you will be trained to deliver a range of interventions at engagement, transitional and move on stages of treatment, to enable service users to have opportunities to reach their full potential.
Within the Birmingham recovery model, the Recovery Champions will have the opportunity to develop skills to support delivery of reception work, duty work, structured group work and supporting individuals in relation to recovery planned objectives. Also to engage service users in the delivery of harm reduction and brief interventions.
The focus of all interventions will be:
·  To promote visible recovery within all aspects of the service.
·  To provide positive role model support to Service Users and Peer Mentors.
·  To promote carer, service user and community involvement
·  To provide a warm and welcoming reception for all clients, staff and colleagues attending the service
·  To engage with a comprehensive training programme
·  Reduce drug related harm to the individual and wider community
·  To promote healthier lives, wellbeing and active citizenship
·  To provide support within effective assessment, case management and coordination for all areas of recovery planning.
·  To provide effective coaching identifying and encouraging areas of strength, skill and opportunity for service users.
·  To support individuals access paid employment and/or relevant training, education or community based activities.
·  To develop skills in evidenced based interventions based on best practice guidelines
·  To contribute to the overall performance of the service to ensure that contractual output targets are achieved.

·  Always treat service users and peer mentors with respect and dignity.
·  Recognise personal and professional boundaries at all times and work within CGL clinical governance framework at all times.
·  Working towards the management of a small caseload of clients focusing on enhanced & personalised recovery options and outcomes.
·  Maintain service user confidentiality in line with CGL policy and data protection legislation.
·  Demonstrate a willingness to reach a level of competency in order to use IT systems including Word; Outlook; electronic case management systems etc.
·  Ensuring that all activities, and interventions are suitably recorded and in accordance with CGL policies, procedures and national guidelines.
·  Support the team in ensuring that that all data requirements are met within deadlines.
·  Present a professional image and actively promote the service at all times to service users, other stakeholders, partnership organisations and the general public.
·  To utilise a flexible approach and where required participate in activities and tasks which directly respond to client and service need.
·  Work with partnership organisations to develop and sustain effective treatment pathways and broaden the client’s recovery plan accordingly.
·  Ensure, with the support of their supervisor and safeguarding Champion, that all safeguarding issues including: child protection and protection of vulnerable adults, are dealt with in accordance to CGL policies and procedures and local and national statutory requirements.
·  Actively participate in regular supervision and be willing to personally reflect on interpersonal dynamics within the therapeutic relationship alongside other supervision requirements as detailed in CGL policy.
·  Work within CGL’s professional development framework participating in active learning and developing professionally, in accordance with service and organisational requirements and current skills and abilities.
·  To actively promote equality of opportunities and diversity
·  Ensure regular consultation with service users and peer mentors.
·  To contribute positively to relevant internal and external forums.
·  To undertake any other duties as instructed by the management team that will contribute to fulfilling the project aims.
General terms of reference: / In carrying out the above duties the post holder will:
·  Work flexibly across operational sites as required.
·  Work flexibly within an agreed number of hours of work to maintain the most appropriate level of service provision this may include late nights and weekend clinics and outreach
·  Provide duty cover for the service as past of a rota
·  Work with different areas of operational delivery including outreach, harm reduction services including Tier 3 clinical and non clinical services, GP shared care, criminal justice services and aftercare as appropriate.
·  Seek to improve personal performance, contribution, knowledge and skills.
·  Provide reception facilities within the service
·  Participate in appraisal, supervision and Learning & Development processes.
·  Keep abreast of developments in services, legislation and practice relevant to the relevant client group.
·  Ensure the implementation of the all CGL policies.
·  Contribute to maintaining safe systems of work and a safe environment.
·  Undertake other duties appropriate to the grade of the post.

Misuse services - This standard covers the development, implementation and monitoring of processes to keep individuals in contact with substance misuse services and prevent them dropping out of treatment. The standard involves using data from your own organisation and local area, together with evidence from national and international research, to identify the reasons for retention and drop-out and to put in place processes to improve retention. It also involves briefing colleagues, supporting them in applying these processes in particular cases, and taking action where an individual is likely to drop out. Users of this standard will need to ensure that practice reflects up to date information and policies.

Person Specification

Essential criteria:

ü  To be an ex Service User of drugs services, have personally achieved abstinence, be free from prescribed medications and not be a current Service User of Substance Use Services.

ü  Experience of substance misuse issues and a clear understanding of modernised and personalised quality services

ü  To no longer be involved with the Criminal Justice system.

ü  Willing to develop and demonstrate an understanding of safeguarding focusing on children and vulnerable adult’s procedures.

ü  Knowledge of the issues facing substance misusers including appropriate medical interventions, social care and health issues.

ü  Show a commitment to develop skills to work with service users on their support plans.

ü  Demonstrate skills to work towards the ability to undertake administrative duties and write reports.

ü  Ability or willingness to work with and manage challenging behaviour

ü  Awareness of and an ability to maintain professional boundaries and work effectively with partnership agencies.

ü  Confidence to work on own initiative as well as part of the team

And the ability to:

ü  Communicate confidently and effectively, verbally and in writing.

ü  Respond flexibly to the demands of the post.

ü  Use motivational interviewing techniques or willingness to develop in this area

ü  Experience of working or volunteering/peer mentoring with substance misuse services and a clear understanding of the need for and ability to deliver quality services.

ü  A clean driving license and access to own transport (non-essential).

ü  Knowledge of local services and geography.
