LEARNING SUPERVISOR

Role Definition

Learning supervision forms a significant contribution to the daily support to teachers and students in the classroom as part of the ‘rarely cover’ initiative. Our Lady’s maintains a team of Learning Supervisors as part of our focus on stability within school.

The fundamental role of the Learning Supervisor is to cover for planned and short term absence. There is a clear range of tasks undertaken by all Learning Supervisors. The first three are central to the core purpose of the post and generally included in job descriptions.

·  specific learning supervision for planned and unplanned absence

·  exam invigilation

·  attendance at full staff and/or departmental meetings

·  general administrative duties

·  producing teacher resources

·  corridor duties, including looking after individual children

·  support for subject staff in departments, including work display

·  covering departmental review activity

Learning Supervisors are invaluable members of our classroom staff and their full integration into the life of the school is a pre-requisite of this. We naturally use staff in a flexible way to enhance provision and maintain stability and continuity.

Schools who employ a pool of cover supervisors feel it has brought a variety of people into school with life experiences and with the personality to benefit pupils, it is also clear that it is having beneficial impact on the two major facets of schools’ work: reducing the number of times teachers have to cover for absent colleagues, and ensuring a degree of continuity in pupils’ learning experience.

The post has proved to be an excellent development opportunity for those staff wishing to gain experience of classroom practices and progress into a teaching or classroom support career.
