EdgeGrip Installation and Cleaning

Safety

When installing EdgeGrip standard personal protective equipment should be worn as a minimum. These include 3M dust mask (or similar), safety goggles, heavy duty gloves and overalls. EdgeGrip should be cut in a well ventilated area or close to extraction points. Dust residue can be disposed of using normal waste disposal methods. No special permissions or licences are required.

Preparation.

Ensure that the areas that are to have EdgeGrip fitted are clean and dry and free from loose and friable material. Any “dished” or damaged surface areas should be patch repaired to provide a reasonably flat and consistent surface.

Dry fit all EdgeGrip panels to ensure that they fit freely and that they sit flat down on to the surface. If required, EdgeGrip can be trimmed on site to suit using an industrial jigsaw and appropriate cutting blades (Bosch “T101 A1F” or similar are ideal).

Drill the fixing locating holes in all the panels. Whilst individual circumstances will vary, the following can be used as a guide:

Screw fixings

If you plan to fit the product using screw fixings the following applies. Drill two holes on each side of the EdgeGrip profile, approx 50mm in from each edge and centred on the top edge. Whilst different sizes of EdgeGrip will determine the exact amount of fixings required a guide would be to drill holes approximately 300mm in from the two holes drilled at each end and then every 300mm-400mm. Marking out in pencil will enable you to achieve evenly spaced drill holes as close to 300mm as possible. Use the first drilled profile as a template for the other panels so as to achieve some form of uniformity.

Fitting the Panels.

Whilst mechanical fixings are all that is required to secure EdgeGrip panels, wherever possible, the application of an appropriate high strength gap filling adhesive (Webbgrip or similar) will provide the following benefits:

A)  A secondary fixing in the event that the mechanical fixings should fail.

B)  A barrier against the “drumming” noise that is created when fitting a cover over the existing substrate.

Apply a 6mm bead of the high strength gap-filling adhesive along the underneath of the profile on the largest edge, approximately 10mm in from the back edge, running it the whole length of the profile. Immediately press the panel firmly to the substrate to ensure adequate transfer of adhesive. A firm bond will be achieved in about one hour under normal circumstances and conditions. Secure with the mechanical fixings and allow the adhesive sealant to cure before allowing excessive traffic to use the areas.

Recommended Mechanical Fixings.

Over Timber.

30mm zinc plated or stainless steel screws.

Over Steel Plate.

20mm self-tapping pan head Pozi stainless steel screws.

Or

20 self-drilling pan head Philips zinc plated screws.

Over Concrete.

30mm zinc plated or stainless steel impact anchors (Hilti HPS-1 or similar).

Over Open Mesh.

Stainless steel or zinc plated saddle clips and domed head bolts suitable in length for the depth of the existing treads.

Just Adhesive fixings

EdgeGrip can be fixed without the need for mechanical fixings. Gap filling adhesives can be used although careful consideration should be given when just using this adhesive. For use on high traffic and outside areas a polyurethane adhesive sealant is recommended. This adhesive should be applied in the same way as the application of the gap filling adhesive above (B). Once installed do not allow the stairs to be used for a minimum of 24 hours. Regardless of the cure time, DO NOT put the steps back into service until all nosings have been checked and confirmed as secure. 3M 5200 FC is recommended, data sheets are available on request.

Cleaning & Maintenance.

In order to maintain the effectiveness of the grit surface with regard to slip resistance, it is very important that the top surface is kept clean. Individual circumstances will vary but, generally a stiff hand brush and hot soapy water will achieve good results. Mild detergents can be used safely on the product but it is advisable to test any cleaning products first. Rather than risk damaging the fitted product, please call our sales office and request a free of charge sample to be dispatched to you.

Type VEFR-25 is a premium vinyl ester resin with a flame spread rating of 25 or less. Type VEFR-25 resin provides the most chemical resistance in the industry, designed to withstand the harshest chemical environments over a broad range of acids and caustics, it is primarily used in petrochemical, waste water, mining, and plating applications where the EdgeGrip is subject to frequent and direct contact with harsh chemicals.

Type VEFR-10 is manufactured with the same high-quality vinyl ester resin but with an enhanced flame spread rating of 10 or less for those applications requiring more flame resistance, such as an offshore platform.

Type IFR-25 is a premium isophthalic polyester resin with a flame spread rating of 25 or less. Type IFR-25 provides an intermediate level of chemical resistance and is the correct resin choice for EdgeGrip subjected to splash and spill contact with harsh chemicals, and is a very good general purpose resin at a reduced cost compared to the premium vinyl ester resin.

Type IFR-10 is the same high quality isophthalic polyester resin but with an enhanced flame spread rating of 10.

Type FG-30 is manufactured using a premium food grade polyester resin containing no harmful ingredients and is certified by the resin manufacturer. Each panel is post cured and detergent washed prior to shipment. This EdgeGrip possesses a flame spread rating of 30.

Type CFR-25 is an orthophthalic polyester resin with a flame spread rating of 25 or less providing moderate chemical resistance. This EdgeGrip is perfect for use in water/wastewater applications, light industrial applications, and in the wave zone areas of offshore platforms where the environment is moderate. Although Type CFR-25 is the least chemical resistant resin, it still offers superior performance to traditional flooring products such as steel, aluminum and wood, and is the most economical resin available.
Type O-AN is the same as type CFR-25 but non-fire retardant.

Type MP-5 is EdgeGrip phenolic where fire resistance, low smoke, and low toxic fumes are critical. Tested in ASTM E-84, Type MP-5 resin has a flame spread rating of 5 and smoke density rating of 5. Our Type-5 EdgeGrip phenolic grating is typically used in confined spaces, subways, offshore and other applications where fire resistance and low smoke generation is absolutely necessary.
