Welcome to the 2018 SPEA Conference! We would like to thank you for your dedication to professional development aimed at providing a quality physical education experience for your students. Our theme, “Moving Together: Embracing Opportunities” focuses on the opportunity to interact, share, and collaborate with one another while embracing the possibilities of culturally responsive teaching that will support all student’s success in physical education.

We would like to thank Jeff Cappo, an Indigenous Advocate teacher at Kitchener Community School, for designing our logo for conference this year. The logo is a representation of the interconnectedness of all cultures, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, interacting and moving together. The symbol acknowledges that we are situated on Treaty 4 land.

SPEA is dedicated to the support of physical education teachers and the curriculum we are all entrusted to deliver. We hope you enjoy the conference and find it a valuable experience!

302 / Atomic Smashbal: Volleyball that’s a HIT with children Gr. 3 – 6 / Tom Ash / In this session, participants will be introduced to Atomic Smashbal. This is a program that
combines skill development and game play experience. The Atomic component addresses
skill development while Smashbal is a fun, fast-paced game of modified volleyball, where
children have an opportunity to use the volleyball skills they are developing. The 1st skill
introduced in Atomic Smashbal is HITTING! As part of the session we’ll consider a
sample teaching progression for introducing young children to proper hitting technique.

eventually you have to get everyone poisoned to win.We have to engage all students
actively and promote physical activity through a dynamic game. Develop student game
presence and decision making ability while being physically active.Promote good
sportsmanship and fair play, by holding individuals accountable for taking personal
responsibility for their behavior in physical competitive situation. The physical quality like
the finger dribble, running to avoid the ball, and targeting will be solicited. It can be played
with OMNIKIN Inc.colored and light balls from 14 to 24 inches…PLAY BALL!__
305 / BOKS Rocks!Introducing BOKS (Build our Kids’ Success), a FREE before-school physical activity program for elementary and middle school children / Derek Pang / This interactive workshop will provide educators, administrators and advocates with the opportunity to engage in BOKS (Build our Kids’ Success), a FREE before-school physical activity program designed to get elementary and middle school children moving in the morning and their brains ready for a day of learning. Sponsored by Reebok and the Reebok Canadian Fitness Foundation in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada, the Canadian Football League. BOKS offers a completely free, turn-key, robust curriculum to empower the community and help children embrace healthy habits that will last a lifetime.
BOKS provides session participants with the tools to support increased opportunities for children to get physically active, improve academic performance and empower their communities to make a positive difference in the lives of children. By the end of this session, participants will be provided with the opportunity to request this FREE program for their school.
306 / Ultimate Frisbee/Disc Sports: Sport for Life / James Topinka Georgina Lee / Ultimate instills and reinforces the values of an active healthy lifestyle that the Saskatchewan Physical Education Association strives to achieve. From the fundamental basics of movement, to the strategy and mental competency that team sport develops, Ultimate offers physical educators the opportunity to teach youth a sport that focuses on Spirit of the Game and Sportsmanship, rather than a win at all cost attitude that many sports tend to foster. Ultimate promotes inclusion of all people and all skill levels. This session will look at some of the key elements of the sport and provide teachers with resources and skills necessary to successfully introduce the sport of Ultimate to their students.
307 / Run, Jump, Throw, Wheel NCCP Coaching Course
Starts @ 8am – 12:30pm / Sarah Junkin / This session will provide participants with NCCP national coaching credentials as a ‘trained’ RJTW teacher instructor to take back with them to their schools and communities. Course focuses
on Physical Literacy on land for ages 6-12 years using the LTAD model as a framework via
track and field inspired games/activities/skill challenges for children in elementary school
and community contexts. All materials provided including Teacher's Manual (Lesson Plans).
308 / Fun Activities for Large Groups in the Gym / Stephanie Ferguson / With an increasing number of students in schools and limited gym space, we are faced with the issue of having to double up PE classes in the gym. This session will focus on how to utilize space and increase activity with large groups in the gym. It will provide you with a number of safe and easy activities to use in the gym with large numbers of students. These activities will meet curricular outcomes and will help to build community in your classes.

The aim of NASP will be discussed and attendees will be shown and given the opportunity to participate in using the archery range as it would be operated in a school setting.

CiannaLieffers / Slamball and Hantis are quickly growing in popularity and are games your students will be able to continue playing outside of PE. Want to add them to your program but don’t have the funds to purchase all of the equipment? No problem! We will show you ways to adapt and modify using items you already have at your school.

404 / Gym Ringette / Amanda O’Donnell / Gym Ringette is a co-ed activity that promotes maximum participation. Ringette is a Canadian game developed originally for girls. Ringette is a fast paced game that requires fitness and strategy. We will adapt the on ice game to the gym and teach fundamental skills through inclusive games.
405 / Track & Field -Technical Session / TBD / A practical and applied presentation will provide attendees with technical skills for an event area in track & field (pre-determined by SPEA organizers). Use this technical session to brush up your skills in the selected event area by learning posture/technique, how to detect & correct errors, event specific warm-up drills, practice drills & progressions.
406 / The Duke of Ed: One more tool to reach and recognize your kids / Nick Haines / Join us as we outline the ways that the Duke of Ed Award program is another effective tool for educators to have in their tool belt. If you are looking for programs to engage newcomer students, high achievers or those who are falling through the cracks, this program is a very unique and individualized program that lets the kids work at their own pace in activities that they enjoy. It’s a great way to recognize their efforts and help them develop into adults who appreciate the importance of volunteerism and community service in their lives, as well as knowing how to set and achieve their own goals.

408 / Designing Success for the K-3 Learner / Graham Hayes
Brian Lewis / Children need to participate in a variety of well-structured activities that develop basic movement skills. The focus should be on fun, inclusive and developmentally appropriate activities. Delegates will be introduced to a variety of methods and equipment they can use to design and adapt their lessons to ensure success for all students at the K-3 level. All participants will be eligible to win an equipment prize package at the conclusion of the session courtesy of Gopher Sports.
409 / KIN-Ball Sport: Skills and Drills / Marc-Andre Laliberte / Following an initiation to the sport, the participants will gain a more in-depth understanding of the rules, techniques and strategies. You will have the opportunity of experiencing series of educative exercises to improve motor skills needed when practicing the sport such as kicking, two person ball control and ball displacements. Also learn how to modify the rules during game time to help students master this unique and intense sport. Finally, fun drills reaching to put your students in game situation that can be used in evaluation when KIN-BALL® sport is played for a full term or a couple of weeks.

501 / Ideas to Integrate Traditional FNMI Activities in PE / Julie Andrews / This is NOT a learn to play games session. The aim is to provide teachers with information and a process, so that they may include FNMI content into their PE classes. This will be accomplished with examples of Woodland Cree and Denesuline traditional knowledge and activities.
502 / Rookie Rugby / Jordan Astrope / Rookie Rugby is designed to give students a fun, safe enjoyable experience. Non-contact version of rugby developed for schools featuring adaptable small sided games. Sanctioned and endorsed program by SPEA and delivers on 46 of the PE Curriculum outcomes from Grades 1-10
503 / DBL Ball / James Levesque / DBL Ball is a new team sport where players can dribble, kick or throw the ball in order to score a goal. Hands and feet are permitted. To score a goal, the player must throw the ball through the side that face the exterior of the field. The defense player can pass through the DBL Ball goal to make a save.Skills from Handball, soccer, basket-ball, Volley-ball and hockey are needed to be a complete DBL Ball Player.
504 / Using Technology to Develop Physical Literacy / Andrew Leslie Brian Guebert / The presenters will discuss how technology can be used to support the development of physical literacy within the classroom. Topics of discussion will include:
  • Utilizing technology to help demonstrate and showcase quality movement patterns
  • Using gamification to improve student engagement and active participation
  • Performing assessment with applications and utilizing the collected data

505 / Healthy Foods at School Sporting Events: Talk the Talk and Walk the Walk / Chelsea Brown / Nutrition and physical activity go hand in hand. Healthy kids = healthy futures. In this session you willlearn strategies, ideas and hear school success stories for supporting a healthy school community – with a focus on nutrition. By offering healthy foods at your school’s sporting events, this helps kids to put into practice what we teach them at home, in the classroom, gym and on the field. It also helps to fuel their activities and promotes optimal performance.
In this session we will also be sharing resources and tools you can use and share with your school to help make the healthy food choice the easier choice for school students, families, coaches and school staff. By making healthy food choices available, this contributes to a culture of wellness at the school, reinforces children, families and community that students’ health and well-being are valued, and helps students to develop healthy habits that can last a lifetime. For the best way to support healthy habits is not only by talking the talk (what you teach children), but also by walking the walk (what you model, offer, and practice at the school, recreation facilities and at sporting events).
506 / Tennis for Schools / Colin Latchford / Learn what opportunities there are to include Tennis in your Phys-Ed curriculum, including Tennis Saskatchewan programs, lesson plans, and more. This will be an active session, where participants will get to try out progressive in-gym tennis equipment.

508 / Infusion of Literacy & Numeracy in P.E / Jen Buettner

509 / Access & Inclusion in Schools: Rick Hansen Foundation School Program / Brenda Gabriel / Join the Rick Hansen Coordinator for a highly interactive workshop on building disability awareness, inclusion and citizenship skills in your classroom. You will walk away with ready-made resources and practical activities you can take into your classrooms immediately. Our resources raise students' understanding of the potential of people with physical, visual and hearing disabilities, and empower students to become difference makers in their school and community. They support a culture of inclusion, where all students accept differences and are best positioned to succeed.
