COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students who havemastered Spanish 1010,1020, 2040 and 2050 or their equivalent. should be able to perform the tasks assigned throughout this course.

COURSE OBJECTIVE EXPECTED OUTCOME:The topicsdiscussed throughout the semester are controversial. Their purpose is to promote lively conversations and debates. Students are expected to be respectful of all points of view expressed. Upon completing this coursesuccessfully,a student will be able to express and explain his or her opinion clearly and concisely in Spanish using the pertinent topical vocabulary introduced in the textbook. Oraland written performance will be assessed.

  • Improved grammar accuracy in oral and written communication

NOTE: In oral and written tasks, students must use the topical vocabulary introduced inthe assignedreadings and in theVocabulario sections.Although NO new grammar concept will beintroduced throughout this course, the textbook provides an excellent review of previously learned material. Each Repaso gramaticalsection provides clear and concise explanations and includes many examples that further elaborate each topic. Careful analysis of the examples should recall a previously learned grammar concept.From the many varied grammar and vocabulary exercises in each chapter, those deemed essential are assigned for homework and will be reviewed during class. You are expected to do any additional exercises that meet your individual needs. Whenever additional practice or explanation is needed, the student should ask and the instructor will gladly review the topic in class or individually during office hours. Your questions are always welcome and often they prove helpful.

Free tutoring is available weekly.There are also several Tertulia (conversation groups).

ORAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:

Topical discussions: regardingthe various ideas expressed in the assigned readings, such as thosein “Opiniones de la gente de la calle”, during class, on the web, in the media, etc. Discussionsmay be in pairs,small or large groups and will include reviewing the homework. Each student must participate and express his/her opinion on each topic. During each of the last 4 weeks of the course, one topic will be discussed at length using a debate format.There will be an opportunity to practice debating each of the four topics prior to debating for a grade.

ABOUT THE READING JOURNALS

  • You will submit 10during the semester (5 at midterm & 5 more before the last week of the semester)
  • LATESUBMISSIONS WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED
  • You should write 1 entry per chapter; required length: minimum: ½ page; maximum: 1 page double spaced)
  • Chapter’s topics provides various options such as commenting onone of the opinions expressed in the text/during class, or something that has been brought up during class,etc.

ABOUTTHE DEBATES

THE 4 TOPIC WILL COME FROM THE 13 CHOSEN DURING THE FIRST WEEK OF CLASS)

  • Preparation begins with organized paired & small group discussions (3 to 4 per group)
  • When in groups of 3, 4 or more;
  • a secretary will record, summarize and report the key points
  • a director will guide, redirectstimulate discussion.
  • each student will serve as director & secretary throughout the semester
  • each student will have a limited time to present a viewpoint & respond directly to some of the opinions expressed
  • students who do not participate will earn agrade of 0 for the task

ABOUTTHE FINAL

  • Students will write a 2 page essay in the Language Laboratory room 106
  • Two weeks before the final exam, 2 possible topics will be chosen from the 13 topicscovered

COURSE POLICIES
While in class students must be engaged listening and speaking Spanish. Each week involves a new topic. Unless instructed to do otherwise, all textbooks and laptops must remain closed during class.

ABOUTCELL PHONES

  • Though necessary, they are an interruption and a temptation
  • Thesemust be turned off during class and remain out of sight and sound throughout the entire class
  • Students who use phones or laptops during class will lose participation points

NOTE: An exception may be made but the student must inform the instructor before class

  • Cheating, plagiarism, & other forms of academic misconduct will not be tolerated

ABOUT MAKE UPS

  • EACH ABSENCE AFTER THE 2 ALLOWED WITHOUT PENALTY WILL INCUR A 1 POINT DEDUCTION FROM YOUR FINAL SEMESTER GRADE
  • ONLY AFTER AN ABSENCE IS VERIFIED & DEEMED JUSTIFIEDMAY A STUDENT BE ALLOWED TO MAKE-UP 1 missed composition
  • Any other missed work or not meeting the deadline will earn a grade of 0

ABOUT ATTENDANCE

  • Punctual arrival to class is expected& early departures will result in points deduction
  • 3 late arrivals equal 1 absence
  • Perfect attendance does not mean that a student earn a high participation grade
  • 2 absences are allowed without penalty
  • Any absence thereafter will result in a 1 point deduction from your final grade.
  • When absent, you are responsible for catching up on you own.
  • There will be no make-up opportunity for any oral activity
