SP CURE Monitoring Committee Meeting

Thursday December 11, 2007 – 11:30 am

Meeting Location: L/E WWTP

2900 South Platte River Drive, Englewood

Host: Phil Russell, 303-762-2611

December Meeting Summary

1.Discussion of August Meeting Summary

There were no comments or corrections to the August Meeting Summary.

2.E. coli in Sediments Presentation

Phil to send Sarah the E. coli presentation for posting to the website.

USGS study showed no correlation between E. coli and urbanization. L/E has worked with Menka Mittal on Dutch Creek to measure E. coli in sediments. Dutch Creek originates in Ken Caryll Ranch and enters the South Platte River just south of Littleton, Colorado. They identified and sampled 4 sampling sites that had flowing water. At each site, she collected 3 sediment samples and 1 water sample. She would then bring the samples into the lab and add distilled water to the sediment and then centrifuge to settle out large particles. The results show that concentrations decreased as summer moved to fall. In addition, concentrations decreased from upstream to downstream. The next step is to expand the sampling to the South Platte River upstream and downstream of L/E WWTP.

City of Lakewood is concerned that Bear Creek was listed on the 303(d) list from Bear Creek Reservoir to the South Platte River. The data come from SP CURE data collection and analysis efforts that are given to the Division and were used for the 303(d) listing effort. Lakewood would like to be privy to data that SP CURE collects before it goes to the Division or STORET.

Sarah to add this issue to the SP CURE Board meeting for next week.

3.Round Robin Sampling

Do round robin sampling for nitrate, TDS, and selenium. South Adams County Water and Sanitation District will make up the samples. We will do the Round Robin on February 12, 2008 and will pick up the samples from the SACWSD at that meeting.

4.QAPP Status and Next Steps

The last time we looked at this was in December 2006. Jon Novick and others (to be determined by email) will be the team to develop the QAPP. Sarah will be the lead (per Dennis Stowe). We will have a draft by the April 2008 Monitoring Committee meeting.

5.Ongoing Sampling Schedule

Sampling will continue on 1st and 3rd Wednesdays. City of Aurora has switched to only taking samples on the 1st Wednesday of the month because of staffing issues.

Sarah to send out sampling schedule for the 2008/2009 sampling seasons.

Sarah to post the sampling schedule and other important monitoring documents to the website.

6.New Business

Fecal Coliform Sampling – We will no longer do fecal coliform sampling as part of SP CURE.
