COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces the student to the concept of the community as the client with emphasis on health promotion and disease prevention. The role of the community health nurse is investigated along with environmental influences on population health. The students research modern social problems and their effect on the nation’s health and apply basic concepts of community health education.

EVALUATION: Upon completion of this course, the student will demonstrate achievement of the course objectives by obtaining a final minimum grade of seventy-eight (78%), as measured by teacher made examinations and other projects.

TERMINAL

OBJECTIVES: 1. Provides direct care based on the nursing process for

clients, with common well-defined nursing diagnoses, within a Structured health care setting, under the supervision of an Experienced registered nurse, doctor or dentist.

2.  Utilizes basic therapeutic communication skills when interacting with clients, families, and other health care team members along the continuum of care

3.  Implements and modifies standard teaching plans for clients under the supervision of a registered nurse.

4.  Organizes basic aspects of care for clients with common Health needs within structured health care settings.

5.  Demonstrates responsibility and accountability to the profession of nursing as well as utilizing nursing research finds.

HEALTH FAIR GUIDELINES

The class will be divided into groups. Each group will choose a topic/skill related to health promotion or illness prevention. Together they will design a booth to be exhibited at a health fair to be presented on the SMC campus or other designated site. A poster for social marketing of the health fair is to be constructed and displayed at the site 1 – 2 weeks prior to the fair. The group should contact/visit the agency, which deals with your topic in this community as a resource. Obtain literature, pamphlets, poster, give-a-ways, videos etc., from the agency or other sources you may find on the World Wide Web. Obtain and organized any equipment needed to use at your booth. The exact date and time of the fair will be announced.

Each student is to write a critique of the experience afterward to be submitted at the final exam. The critique should include your perception of your group dynamics, effectiveness of the presentation of information at the fair and recommendations for change if done in the future. The critique will be 5% of your total grade. Participation in the health fair is mandatory to pass the course.

Write a 5 to 10 page research paper examining the topic and it’s impact on community health. The paper should be typewritten, double-spaced with one inch margins on all edges. A minimum of four references are to be used and a reference list included with paper. References should be professional journals or textbooks which are not more than five years old. Interviews with experts on the topic can also be used as references. References should be cited in the text of the paper. Use APA format.

Week XI COMPLETED PAPER DUE

On weeks XI – XIII group presentations of the chosen topic along with explanation of the collage’ will be given to the class lasting 15 – 30 minutes each.

The project is 20% of the course grade. The written paper will be graded by instructor (10%) the class presentation will be graded by the class and instructor using a point system (10%) completion of part parts of the project is required to pass the course.

Written paper:

Organization (10%) logical structure, use of heading

Content (75%) accurate, concise, thorough, complete, clear

Resources (10%) sources identified, work supported with references, appropriate professional references.

Mechanics (5%) correct grammar, accurate spelling without typos, follows APA guidelines.
