The Grade 8 Home Economics program consists of two sections that include:

Clothing & Textiles and Foods & Nutrition

COURSE OVERVIEW

The focus of Home Economics is to give students the KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ATTITUDES that they will need to be able to live as successful young people in a modern society. This course, with an emphasis on clothing & textiles and foods & nutrition will build on the skills gained in Grade 7 Home Economics and continue to lay a foundation that will be built on in Grade 9 and other Home Economics courses. This course is provincially approved and follows the Manitoba Education and Training Grade 8 Home Economics curriculum.

GOALS & OBJECTIVES

  • Students will demonstrate the proper use and care of sewing machines and related tools.
  • Students will explore various types of fibers to help make informed choices on fabric selection.
  • Students will construct a sewing machine project – PJ Pant or Sports Bag
  • Students will critically analyze a number of different foods and relate the findings to personal health and wellness
  • Students will demonstrate the art of combining foods into creative and nutritious meals and using a variety of skills and tools.

INCORPORATING ICT into HOME EC

  • An effort will be made to have students in Grade 8 Home Economics be exposed to the safe use of the computer and Internet for Food & Nutrition based research including but not limited to web-based research – such as recipe searches and use of computer based nutrition programs.

Students are responsible for missed assignments and tests

**Final assessment in Home Ec will include a combination of both written and practical hands-on assignments.

Including but not limited to a written test/quiz and a group cooking lab assignment.

COURSE EXPECTATIONS

  1. Students are expected to act in a safe manner at all times
  2. Inappropriate behaviour will NOT be tolerated!
  3. RESPECT – for self, teacher, other students and class equipment
  4. Students will arrive ON TIME.
  5. Students will bring all necessary supplies to class including:

  • Container (for Foods Labs)
  • Hair Elastic (for Foods Labs)
  • Apron (for Foods Labs)
  1. Students are expected to fully participate in lab

FOOD ALLERGIES

Food allergies have been taken into consideration in the planning of the labs - we will not be using any of the severe allergens including seeds, nuts or seafood.

Any other food allergy will be taken into consideration – please notify the teacher on the returned signed course outline.
