Southern Cayuga Jr. High School (7 & 8) Summer Reading Project

Hello 7th and 8th grade students and thank you for participating in the inaugural year of the Summer Reading Project. It is proven that students lose a significant amount of reading ability over the summer while they are not in school. Our mission is to encourage you to be year-round readers by offering you a number of different incentives. You benefit from the incentives as well as your ability to transition easier to the next year’s level of reading materials.

The Requirements for all students in grades 7 & 8:

You will read one (or more if you so desire) text of your choice. It must be a text that you have not read.

·  Notice it says text and not book. We want you to be able to choose what type of text you read. The following are examples of texts that you may choose from. (Please note that this list does not include everything. If you decide that you want to read something that isn’t on this list, check with your English teacher or Mrs. Sedorus.)

ànovel, biography, short story, poem, play, magazine, newspaper, blog, online news article, scholarly journal, manual, textbook, anthology, religious text.

àBooks can be borrowed from teachers and the library here at school before you leave for the summer. You can also visit the local libraries: Hazard Library in Poplar Ridge, Aurora Free Library in Aurora, Seymour Public Library in Auburn, and the Tompkins County Public Library in Ithaca.

You will keep a reading log (Page 2).

·  Keep track of when you read. (Date and duration.) You will have your parents sign off on your reading log.

You will complete a Reading Review handout (Page 3 or 4)

·  Based on the type of book you choose, you will either complete the non-fiction or fiction handout

You will turn in your materials to your English teacher on the first day of school for a grade!

·  You will be required to turn in your reading log, your review, and library book (if you borrowed one from school) in class on the first day of school. If you fail to hand in the materials on time you will not receive full credit. Being on time and meeting deadlines is very important.

You will receive a breakfast party, a gift card, and your first 100 in your English class.

·  If you have any questions, email Mrs. Mills () or Mrs. Picciano () for grade 7 and 8.

·  You can also find the instructions and Reading Review handouts on the school website: www.southerncayuga.org.

Got Book? How Much Can YOU READ??

Keep track….
