Course Summary: This course is designed to give the student a basic foundation of knowledge of how to read music and play the piano.
Course Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will know: The students will know how to read notes on the treble and bass clef, time signatures, key signatures and the basic roadmap written in music.
By the end of the course, students will be able to: The students will be able to perform songs with both hands at the same time in various.

Units of Study
Units Topic / Primary Learning Outcome
Chapter #1: “C” Position on the Grand Staff / Perform 2 songs in the “C” position with both hands together.
Chapter #2: Melodic and Harmonic Intervals in the “C” Position / Identify 2nd, 3rd, 4th,5th intervals in the “C” position both in writing and playing.
Chapter #3: C Major Chord / Perform 2 songs that include the C Major Chord.
Chapter #4: G7 Chords for Right and Left Hand / Perform 2 songs that include G7 chords and identifying the chords in a writing exercise.
Chapter #5: ¾ Time Signature / Identifying 3 beats in a measure in a written exercise and also performing a song in ¾ time.
Chapter #6: Slurs and Legatos / Identifying the difference between a slur and tie in writing as well as playing a song that uses both ties and slurs.
Chapter #7: C, G7 and F Chords in both the right and left hand / Perform 2 songs using all 3 chords in both the right and left hand. Also, identifying all 3 chords in a writing activity.
Chapter #8: “G” Position / Perform 2 songs in the “G” position as well as identifying the melodic and harmonic intervals in a writing exercise.
Chapter #9: The Sharp Sign / Perform a song that includes the sharp sign as well as identify the sharped notes in written examples.
Chapter #10: G and D7 Chords – Block and Broken / Perform 2 songs using these chords both in block and broken form. Identify these chords in a writing exercise.
Chapter #11: “E” in the Left and Right Hand and the C Chord / Perform songs that includes an “E” in the left and right hand and the C Chord as well as identify the “E” in a writing exercise.
Chapter #12: Middle C Position, Dynamic Signs, Fermatas and Eighth Notes / Perform 3 songs including all of these concepts.
Chapter #13: The 6th Interval / Perform a song that include the 6th interval and identify the 6th interval in a written exercise.
Chapter #14: 2/4 Time Signature / Perform a song in 2/4 time signature.
Advanced Learner Recommendations
*The students are able to work at their own pace. If they are able to play a song correctly with the right notes, fingers and correct rhythm, they may move on to the next page.
