1.  MAJOR OBJECTIVES

Social Studies 11 has three major components. The first deals with government and politics in Canada. The second theme involves an examination of the world from a global perspective by investigating such major concerns as population growth, the distribution of resources, and the impact of industrialization and technology on society. While the final theme examines contemporary Canada and our relations with the rest of the world; areas of study would include such things as Canada during the two World Wars. Throughout the course, current events will be addressed and their implications discussed.

2.  MARKING AND EVALUATION

Student evaluation is based upon their progress towards achieving the prescribed learning outcomes for each unit (see Section 5 of this outline). Social Studies teachers employ a variety of methodologies (tests, quizzes, assignments, projects, written responses, reports, discussions, current events, etc) to ensure that all students have the opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. To assist in this regard, clear guidelines for performance are established (often in the form of marking rubrics). These performance standards will be reviewed with students when the assignment is first introduced.

In the event that a student is failing or otherwise performing poorly, an interim report will be issued. The reporting symbol “I” will be used to alert parents that the student is not demonstrating minimally accepted performance standards. The student will then have the opportunity to submit the specified missing work in a timely manner. Students will only receive this grade ONCE over the course of the year.

ALL STUDENTS IN SOCIAL STUDIES 11 WILL WRITE A GOVERNMENT MANDATED FINAL EXAMINATION WORTH 20% OF THEIR FINAL GRADE. Each term will be worth 40% of the overall grade for Social Studies 11.

Marks for Social Studies 11 will be broken down as follows: (this breakdown may vary each term according to the discretion of your teacher):

Class/Homework …………………… 10-20%

Oral/Current Events ………………… 5-10%

Assignments ………………………... 25-40%

Quizzes/Tests ………………………. 25-35%

Student Evaluation is based on the percentage achieved. Marks are assigned on the basis of the following scale.

A 86-100 C 60-66

B 73-85 C- 50-59

C+ 67-72 F or I 0-49

Effort marks will be determined based on student participation, exclusive use of French, on-task behaviour, punctuality, attendance, attitude and completion of assigned work.

3.  EXPECTATIONS OF STUDENTS

Students are expected to arrive in class on time, with all of their necessary equipment and be prepared to work. All students are expected to carry their Student Agenda and use it to record marks, homework and due dates. Late assignments will not be accepted unless arrangements have been made with the teacher prior to the due date of the assignment. Missed class-work, assignments and tests are the responsibility of the student. Students are expected to check with their teacher or friends to keep up with any work missed due to absence – absence is not an excuse for missed work.

§  pay attention in class
