Course Description:

/
This middle school earth science course is designed to give all students an overview of common strands in earth science including, meteorology, geology, astronomy, oceanography, resources, and human impact on the earth. The following topics will be covered this year:
1.  The scientific view of how the earth’s surface is formed through investigating the following:
·  compare and contrast the crust, the mantle, and the core
·  classify rock by their process of formation
·  explain the effects of physical processes such as plate tectonics, erosion, deposition, and volcanic eruption
·  understand how fossils show evidence of the changing surface and climate of earth
2.  How the distribution of land and oceans affects climate:
·  understand that land and water absorb and lose heat at different rates causing different types of weather
·  relate how moisture evaporating from the oceans affects the weather
3.  The significant role of water in earth’s processes:
·  understand the % of earth’s surface that is water and the % of earth’s surface that is land
·  water cycle
·  causes of waves, currents, and tides
4.  The effects of the relative positions of the earth, moon, and sun:
·  phases of the moon
·  solar and lunar eclipses
·  distribution of sunlight throughout the year and its effect on climate
5.  The scientific views of the universe and how those views evolved:
·  geocentric and heliocentric views and history
·  compare and contrast the planets in the solar system
·  position of the solar system in the Milky Way galaxy and the universe
·  motion of objects in the day and night sky due to relative position
·  the force that governs the motion in the solar system is gravity
·  characteristics of comets, asteroids, and meteors
