ParticipationonaSouthDearbornHighSchoolathletic teamisaprivilege that shouldbetaken veryseriously. Therehavebeen manyathletesaheadofyouwhohavesethighstandardsand establishedgreat traditions. Theopportunitytobeapart ofateam carries withit the responsibilityofupholding those standardsandtraditions. At SD,wehaveadesiretowin that drivesus toprepareandperform toour bestabilities. Thepurposeof thispublicationis tomakesurethat everyoneunderstandswhatisrequiredandwhat isexpectedforparticipationinaSouth Dearbornathleticprogram.TheexpectationsoftheAthleticDepartmentarealsooutlinedas this relationshipisapartnershipwherebyall stakeholdershavearesponsibilitytocontribute. SOUTH DEARBORNATHLETIC DEPARTMENT GENERALRULESANDREGULATIONS
AthletesatSouthDearbornHighSchool areheldtoahigher standardthan most students because theyarechoosing torepresent theirschool inawaythatothersdonot.Theiractions anddecisionswill bein thepubliceyeandwill reflectbackonothersthatareassociatedwith theschool. For thisreason,wehaveestablishedthefollowingrulesandregulations,including theKnight Code, soathletesandparentsknowexactlywhatisexpectedof them inorder to remainingoodstandingwith theAthleticDepartment.
Academics–Student-Athletesareexpectedto maintainexcellencein theclassroom beyond theminimum requirementsofeligibility. Theirattitudesandeffortsinclassshould mirror theirattitudesandefforts inextracurricular activities. Theyare studentsfirst. Coaches understandtheimportanceofeducationandhavebeeninstructedtostay informedof anyacademicproblems that mayariseandalsotoallowstudentstoreceive tutoring afterschool,evenifitconflictswithapracticeschedule.
AthleticTrainer/TrainingRoom–Anathletictrainerwill beavailableonalimitedbasis.The training room will beopenimmediatelyafterschoolfor anyathleteswhoneedattention beforepracticesbegin.Therewill bea trainerat as manycontestsaspossible throughout theyear.
Attendance–Team membersareexpectedtobeat all practices, contests, teammeetingsor other teameventsunlessexcusedbytheheadcoachinadvance. If anathleteneedsto missapracticeorotherfunction,prior notificationispreferred. Incaseswherethe absenceisunexpected, communicationwith theheadcoachabout theabsenceshould takeplaceassoonaspossible. Contact shouldbe madepersonallyanddirectlyto the headcoachbytheathleteor athlete’sparent. Pleasedonot tell another team member totell thecoachthatyouwill notbe there.Perpetual absencesandtardiness toteam functionsmayhaveanadverseaffect ontheamountofparticipationoffered toan athlete.
Chainof Command–It isinevitable thatatsomepointaparentwill haveaconcernabout his/her childandwillwant tosolvewhateverissueisat hand.Theresolutionofaconflict is morelikelytooccuriftheproperstepsaretakenwhendealingwith theissue. Please use thefollowingasaguide tohandlingconflictwithacoach:
Speak withthecoachfirst, but not immediatelyafteracontest. Coacheshave beeninstructednot totalk toparentsright after gameswhenemotionsare runninghighanddrivingtheconversation. Taketime tocool off andmakean appointmentwiththecoach for thenext day.Ifthe resultsof thefirst meetingare notsatisfactory, request a meetingwiththeAthleticDirector, whichmayor may notincludethecoach. Thenext stepistospeakwiththePrincipal, thenthe Superintendent, thentheBoardof Trustees.
ConflictswithOtherActivities–At SouthDearbornthereareanumber ofextracurricular activitiesofferedandsometimesthereareconflictswithathleticschedules.The coachesandsponsorsof theseactivities must bereasonableanddiplomaticin their decisionsinvolvingstudentswhoareinvolvedin multiplegroups. If necessary,the AthleticDirector mayget involved tohelp reachacompromisesothestudentcan continue togetawell-roundededucational experiencewithoutpenaltyfrom missingan event.
FinancialResponsibility–Withtheexceptionof thetransportationfee, thereisno“payto play”feerequiredofeachathlete. However,mostprogramsatSDHS haveastudent packetavailablewhichincludesgear that theathletesget tokeep.It isimperative that thefinancial obligationspertaining tothesepacketsarefulfilledinorder forindividual programstosurvivein today’seconomicclimate. Oftentimestherearefundraisers madeavailable to reduceindividual packetcosts.Ifyouhaveafinancial hardship that prohibitsyoufrom payingfor thepacket at thetimepaymentisdue,contact thehead coachandAthleticDirector toestablishapaymentplanover time.
Injuries–Thepossibilityforinjury isalwayspresentinathleticprograms, especiallyat thehigh school level. Ifaninjuryoccursat acontestorpractice,firstnotifythecoachandathletic trainerforassessment oftheinjury.Iftheinjury issuchthatadoctorvisitis required, SDHS recommendsgoing toasportsmedicinedoctor asopposedtoafamilyphysician. Sportsmedicinedoctorsarehighlytrainedintheareaofsports injuriesandwill most likelyhave thebest planfor returning theathleteto thefieldofplay. Itshouldalsobe notedthat any injurythat requiresanathletetomiss timeperdoctor’sorder must be followedupwitha returntoplayreleasefrom thesamedoctororsomeonewhois
equallyqualifiedtoreturn theathletetoaction. Incasesofconcussionsorother head injuries, theproceduresset forthintheConcussionManagement Program mustbe followedwithoutexception. TheReturntoPlayform that will beusedcanbefoundin this handbook. Itisalsoimportant toknowthat theSouthDearbornSchool Corporation
doesnot carry insurancetocoverindividual student-athleteinjuries. Parentswill
assumefinancial responsibilityfor careofinjuries thatoccur at SD eventsandpractices.
KnightCode–Adhering totheKnightCodemeans makingacommitment torepresenting SouthDearborninapositivewaybyavoidingsituations that could resultinsuspensions ordismissalfrom ateam. Anathletecanbetemporarilysuspendedor dismissedfroma teamforactionsthat includebut arenot limitedtothefollowing:

SubstanceAbuse
Theuseofalcohol, tobaccoand/ordrugswill not be toleratedfrom our athletes. Any evidenceofusagethat ispresentedtotheathleticdepartmentwill bedealt withswiftly andseverely. Itis important for our athletestorealize that violationsoftheKnightCode canoccurinoroutof school,inor out ofseason. Aninfractioninvolvingtheuseor possessionofalcohol, tobaccoor drugscarriesthefollowingpenalties:
Firstoffense: Lossof 20%ofscheduledcontests
Secondoffense: Lossof50%ofscheduledcontests
Thirdoffense: Lossof participationfor acalendar year frominfractiondate
Fourthoffense: Lossof participationfor acalendaryear frominfractiondateor conclusionof thirdoffensesuspension
Fifthoffense: Lifetimesuspensionfrom participation
Note that exclusion from team activitiesisimmediateupondeterminationofsuspension. Athleteswhoareservingapartial seasonsuspensionaretocontinuetoparticipatein everypracticeandattendeverycontest but arenotallowed todressinuniformor participateinanywayat any level. Also, forasuspension tocount,anathletemust finishtheseasoningoodstandingwiththeteam.Quittingateam beforeaseasonends makesanysuspensiontimeservednull andvoidand thenumberof contestsrequiredto missstartsover. Ifasuspensionisgivenwithless that20%or50%of theseason remaining, thentheleftoverpercentagecarriesovertothenext seasoninwhich the athleteparticipates.
LockerRooms–It isnearly impossiblefor coaches tomonitor locker roomstheentiretimethat teamsareinthere. Evenifanadult isnot present, thereneedstobeacertainamount of decorum evidentanditshouldbeuptotheupperclassmenofeachprogram tomonitor locker room situationsandestablishcontrol.Thereis tobenoroughhousingor
horseplayandhazingof anykindisstrictlyprohibitedandwill resultinimmediate
disciplinaryactionpursuant totheKnight Code.Locker roomsareschool propertyand shouldbe takencareof withpride. Studentsshouldkeeptheirareascleanandpickup after themselvestomaintainarespectableenvironment.
NCAA–Anystudent-athletewhoisinterestedinparticipatinginathleticsat thecollegelevel needs toregister with theNCAA Eligibility Center. It isimportant toknowtheacademic requirementsforparticipationbeyondhighschool. Studentsshouldapplytothe
Eligibility Centerbythejunioryearat
Participation–Inorder toparticipateonanathletic team,astudent must meet all eligibility requirementssetforthbytheIHSAA andSDHS asoutlinedinthe“Eligibility”sectionof thishandbookandmust beingoodstandingwiththecoachandAthleticDepartment by adhering totheKnightCodeandfollowingtherulessetforthbytheheadcoach.
PersonalConduct–Athletesat SDHS arerepresentativesoftheirschool atalltimes,during andafter school hours.Theexpectationisfor them toconduct themselvesinsucha
waythatit presentsapositiveimageofSouthDearborn. Anyparticipantwhoseconduct is judgedtoreflect poorlyonhimself/herself, theteam, or theschool will besubject to disciplinaryactionasdeterminedbytheheadcoach,AthleticDirector or Principal.
QuittingaTeam–Quittingateam onceaseasonhasstartedisunacceptableatSD
andcarrieswithit restrictionsonfutureparticipation. Anyathletewhohasparticipatedin ten(10) practiceswithone teamorhasbeenthroughatryoutweekandselectedfor
theteam isconsideredamember ofthat team.Onceanathletehasestablished membershiponateam,he/shecannotquit that teamandimmediatelyparticipateon another teaminthatsameseason.Furthermore, thestudent whoquit isprohibited
fromanyworkouts involvingateam for another seasonuntiltheseasoniscompletedfor
theteam thathe/shequit.Theexceptiontotransferring toanother sport occurswhena student triesout for ateamandisnotselected.Inthiscase, it wasnot thestudent’s decision toquit andifanother coachiswillingtoadd thatstudenttohis/hersquad, he/shecandoso.Togetenoughpracticestobeeligible,thefollowingapplies:
If astudent participates in five(5) practicesandgetscut from ateam andthen joinsanother team, he/sheisonlyrequiredtoparticipateinfive(5) more practiceswiththenew team tobeeligible for acontest.
If astudent participates inlessthanten(10) practicesandthenquitstogoto another team, he/shemustparticipateinten(10)practiceswiththenew team beforebeingeligible for acontest.
RequiredForms–Beforeastudentparticipates inanathleticcontest,he/sheandaparent must completeandsubmit thefollowingformstotheathleticdepartment:

RemovalfromaContest–Anyathlete, coachor team personnelejectedfrom acontestbya contest official will beautomaticallysuspendedfor theremainderof thatcontest plusthe nextscheduledcontest.
RemovalfromaTeam – Insomeinstancesit isnecessarytoremoveanathletefromateam for thebenefit of theprogram. Causesfor removalfromateam areoutlinedin the “KnightCode” sectionof thishandbook. Removalfrom ateam will bemadebythe coachof thesport withapproval from theAthletic Director andPrincipal. Removal may alsobeinitiatedbytheAthleticDirector or Principal. Coacheswill conferwith the AthleticDirector or Principal beforeanyremoval actionistaken.Oncethedecision to removeismade, parentsandathleteswill benotifiedimmediatelyandtheDueProcess
procedurewill befollowed.
DueProcess
Whenadecisionhasbeen madetoremoveor suspendanathlete,writtennotification will begiven totheathleteandparentsexplainingtheintent tosuspendorremoveand thereasonsfortheaction. Upon receiptof thisnotification, parentswill thenhavefive (5) days tocontact the coachand/orAthleticDirector toscheduleaninformal meeting to reviewthesituation. If suspension/removal isupheld,parentsthenhavefive (5)days to sendarequest totheAthleticCouncilfor anappeal hearing.TheAthletic Council shall hear theappeal within three(3) daysofreceipt of appeal request andwill makea
decisionwithin twenty-four(24) hoursofthemeeting.Ifparentsarenot satisfiedwith the decisionoftheAthleticCouncil,theyhave theright toappealtotheSuperintendent of schoolsaswell as theBoardofEducation.The student will remainineligiblefor competitionfor thedurationofthedueprocess.
SchoolEquipment/Uniforms –Theathleteisresponsiblefor anyandallequipmentissuedto him/her,includingschooluniforms. Any lostordamagedequipment or uniformsmust be replacedwith thefinancial burdenplacedontheathleteandhis/herparents.
SquadSelection –Theselectionofasquadisthe responsibilityoftheheadcoachwithinput from thecoachingstaff.TheAthleticDirectordoesnot haveany inputor influenceinthe decisionsofwho makestheteam or onwhatlevel theyplay. Everyparticipantwill be given theopportunitytoattendandparticipateina set number ofpractices, determined by the head coach. After thosepractices, ifastudentisnot selected, thecoachwill notifyhim/herpersonallythat theydidnotmaketheteamandwill provide justificationfor thedecision.Thereareanumber offactorsthatareconsideredwhenselectingateam.Talent andathleticismisnot a guaranteethataspotwillbeavailable. Attitude, attendanceandcoach abilityarejusta fewexamplesofthings thatacoachconsiderswhenpickinghis/her team.
TeamPolicies–Inaddition tothepoliciesset forthbytheAthleticDepartment,eachhead coachwill haveaset ofrulesandexpectationsfor his/her particularprogram.Individual disciplinewill be managedbythecoachesunlessaviolationoccursthat requiresthe attentionoftheAthletic Director or Principal. Ifyouareunawareoftherulessetforthfor a team, ask thecoachforacopy.
Tickets/Passes–Thesaleofticketsfor homecontests isnecessarytoprovidefinancial support toall programsin theAthletic Departmentaswell as topayforofficials,workers andothernecessitiesfor hostingcontests. Adult ticketsforVarsity, Junior Varsity, and Freshmancontestsare$5.00 (excludingcrosscountry,golf, and tennis.) Student ticketsare available for purchasedatany of the South Dearborn Community School’s at a discounted rate of$3.00. The student ticket can only be used once but is good for any high school athletic event. All Sports Passesareavailablefor students($40), adults ($60) orfamily($200)andareavailablein theoffice. SeniorCitizenYearly Passes (65+) arealsoofferedatacost of$5.00. Passesaregoodforanycontestexcept tournaments,includingthestatetournamentseries.
Transportation–Atransportationfeewill beassessedforeachstudent athleteperseason.
Theamountof thefeewill bedeterminedeach yearbytheSouthDearbornSchool
Boardandwill bedue totheathleticofficeprior tothestart ofthecontest season. South DearbornHighSchoolwill provide transportationtoall contestsandwestrongly encourageall participatingstudentstoridehomewith theteambywhatever means providedbytheschool.However,uponcoach’sconsent, aparent maychoose to transport their sonor daughter homeafter acontest. Insuchcases,aconsent form must becompletedprior tothestudentbeing releasedfrom thecoach’scare. All coacheswill haveformsavailableateachevent. Studentswill noteverbereleasedtotravel froma contest withanyoneother thanaparentoranadultthathasbeendesignatedbythe student’sparent.Ifastudentwill be ridinghomewithanotherstudent’sparent(s), consent mustbegivenbytheAthletic Directornolater thantheendofschool on theday oftheevent. Consentformsfor releasetoanotherparent areavailablein theSDHS athleticoffice.
TwoTeams, SameSeason–Occasionally itispossiblefor astudent toparticipateontwo teamsat thesametimeduringoneseason.Themost commonexampleisasoccer playerwhokicksfor thefootball teamonFridaynights. However,in mostcases, thisisa verydifficult situationtomanagebecauseofconflictingschedules. Studentsare discouragedfromparticipatingin twosportsduring thesameseasonbecauseofthe conflictsandtheadditional strainplacedonthestudentwhohasmultiplepracticesto attendonadailybasisinaddition totherequirementsthat comewithclasswork. Inthe raresituationwhereanathleteissharedbytwoprograms,itisimperativethat thereis communicationbetweenbothheadcoachesandtheathlete.Theathletemust also declare tobothcoacheswhichoftheteamsishis/her prioritysotheyknowexactlywhat toexpect insituationswhereschedulesconflict.Ifareasonablecompromisecannot be reachedbetween theathleteandbothcoaches,theAthleticDirector mayrequirethe athletetochooseoneprogram insteadoftryingtodoboth.
Weight Room–Theweight room isavailablefor usebyteamsbeforeandafter school upon request.Thereisafull programofweight trainingofferedduring theschool yearand summerunder theguidanceofastrengthandconditioningcoach. Nostudentshall use theweight roomwithout adultsupervision,norwithouthavingaphysical onfileinthe athleticoffice.Morespecificrulesandregulationscanbeobtainedfrom thestrength andconditioningcoach.
INDIANAHIGH SCHOOLATHLETICASSOCIATION
TheIndianaHighSchoolAthleticAssociation, IHSAA,is thegoverningbodythat maintainsthe rulesandregulationsthatensureequity incompetitionfor student-athletesofall ofitsmember schools. Membershipisvoluntaryandopen toanyhighschool inthestateofIndianathat is accreditedbytheIndianaDepartmentofEducation. Theorganizationisin turngovernedby theNFHS, National FederationofStateHighSchool Associationsandtogether theyhave developed thearticlesandby-laws thatdetermine therulesandexpectationsforeachsport. TheIHSAA offersatournament series in20sports, 10forgirlsand10forboys,ofwhich19are offeredatSouthDearbornHighSchool (gymnasticsistheonlyexception). Someof thestate
tournamentsarebrokenintoclassesbasedonenrollmentandsomearesingleclass. Asof this publication,SouthDearbornHighSchoolfallsintothefollowingclasses:

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Eligibilityofastudent-athleteisdeterminedbyboth theIHSAA andSouthDearbornHigh School. Thedetailsof IHSAA eligibilitycanbefoundin theIHSAA By-LawsandArticlesof Incorporation, whichareavailableon theirwebsiteat However,someofthekey points toachievingandmaintainingeligibilityfrom theIHSAA andSDHSareasfollows:
Age–A student must notbe20yearsoldprior tooronthescheduleddateoftheIHSAA state finals inthesport inwhichhe/sheparticipates.
Attendance–Studentsmust bepresentatschool nolater than10:30am tobeeligibleto participateinacontest or practicethat day.Exceptionsfor extenuatingcircumstances maybegrantedbytheprincipal or athleticdirector.
Enrollment/Grades–Studentsareeligiblefor amaximumof12trimesters (8semesters) and mustalsohavebeenenrolledinsomehighschool within thefirst15school daysof the trimesterinwhichthesportoccurs. Students must have receivedpassinggradesand credit in70%oftheclassestakenin thegradingperiodprior totheir seasongrading period.Theymust alsobeenrolledin70% ofthemaximumnumber ofclassesduring the season. At SouthDearborn, that translatesto4outof5classes.
Physical–A physical mustbeonfilein theathleticoffice,datedonor afterApril 1ofthe calendaryear thatbeginstheschool year (i.e., April 1, 2017for the2017-18school year). Physicalforms,includingtheConsent & Release (page4), mustbetheformsspecifiedby theIHSAA andcanbeobtainedat SDHS orprintedfrom theIHSAA websiteunder Schools-Forms.

Practice–Astudent-athlete must attendandparticipatein10separatedaysofpracticeprior to competinginacontest (5practicesrequiredforascrimmage).Theexception tothatisif

Returntoplay–An Indianastatelaw,establishedfor thebeginningof the2015-2016school year, requiresanevaluationbyalicensedhealthcareprovider trainedin theevaluation andmanagement ofconcussionsandheadinjuriesforanystudent-athletethat hasbeen removedfromagamefor aheadinjuryorissuspectedofhavingaheadinjurysustained duringapracticeorcontest. Returntoplaywill bedeterminedbytheevaluationandwill followthescheduledesignatedonthe“Release toPlay” form providedbytheIHSAA.
Suspension–Anystudentwhohasbeensuspendedfrom school orspends theschool day in In-SchoolSuspensioncannot participateinagameorpracticeonthedayofthe suspension.Ifastudenthasbeensuspendedfrom acontest for aviolationoftheKnight Code,he/sheisstill requiredtoparticipateinpracticeandattendcontestsbutcannot dress inuniform withtheteam or participateinanyway in thecontest.
Transfer–TheIHSAA reserves theright togrant eligibilityonalimitedbasis, meaningno participationonavarsityteam, whenastudent transferstoor from a member school after establishingenrollment inahighschool.The majorityof thelimitedeligibilitydecisions occur when thereisnoaccompanyingbonafidechangeof residence.Thespiritof the transfer rulesistoprohibitthemovement ofstudentstoanotherschool primarilyfor athleticreasons.Tobeeligiblefor aseasonafter atransfer withoutachangeof
residencebytheparents, theremust becredibleevidence that meetsoneof thefollowing

Honoreesare selectedbyeachteam’srespectivecoachingstaff. All-EIAC selectionfor individual sports is determinedbyplacementintheEIAC tournament event.
SPORTSMANSHIP
Sportsmanshipisa vital component toapositiveexperienceinhighschool athletics. Learning theimportanceofwinningandlosingwithdignityisanessential part ofthedevelopmentof
one’scharacter. Itisthehopeof theSouthDearbornHighSchool administration,aswell as the
EIAC andIHSAA, that all participants, coachesandspectatorsshowtheir school pridebyacting inawaythatpromotessupport ofandbringshonor totheirschool whilealso respectingother schools’ representatives. At SouthDearbornHighSchool,wehavehighexpectationsofhow
ourathletes, coaches, parentsandspectatorsconduct themselvesandwill nottolerateany behaviorthatisdeemedunsportingorderogatorytowardotherplayers, coaches,officialsor opponents’fans.
TheIHSAA offersasportsmanshipbannereveryyeartoanyschoolthat goes throughtheentire school yearwithouthavingaplayeror coachgetejectedforanyreasonfromacontest.This awardisvery important toSouthDearbornandweexpectour athletesandcoachestoadhere
totherulesof theirsportandconductthemselves ina manner thatwould makeothersinthe SouthDearbornfamilyproud.Winningisimportant, but itdoesnot takeprecedentover sportsmanship.Thereisnoexcusefor behaviorthat results in removalfromacontest andour coachesshouldbesetting theexampleforourathletes tofollow.Parentscanalsohelpby conducting themselvesinawaythatpromotesgoodsportsmanshipatalltimes.

Awards for Participation–Participationcertificateswill beawarded toanyonewho participatedat thefreshmanor junior varsity level butdidnotqualifyfor a varsity letter. Varsity letterswill begiven toanyathletewhocompletestheseasoningoodstanding andalsoqualifiesbasedon thecriteriafor aletterthat hasbeenestablishedbythe headcoach.Eachcoachshouldcommunicatetohis/her athletesandparentswhatit takestoqualifyfor avarsity letter. Anexceptionto thisruleismadeforanyseniorwho hasparticipatedinthesamesportfor four (4) yearsbut doesnot meet theminimumrequirementsforearningaletter. Purpose–ThepurposeoftheAthleticCouncil istointegrateall interscholasticathletesof the elementaryschools, themiddleschool andthehighschool within thetotaleducational programof theschool district.
Functions–Themainfunctionsof theAthleticCouncil areasfollows:
Evaluate theathleticprogram onacontinuingbasis. Assistindetermining thescopeof thetotal program.
Developalong-rangeprogram forcontinueddevelopmentof facilities. Assistinunificationof coachingobjectivesfor thetotal program. Establishapolicy foranathlete’sacademicstandards.
Determinetherelationship thatshouldexist betweenhighschool, middleschool
andelementaryschool coachingstaffs. Establishandmaintainathleticrulesandpolicies.
Hearandruleonappealsof suspensionsanddismissals.
Existasanopenforum for thediscussionof athleticconcernsof thecoaching staffand student athletes.
AthleticCouncilwill not functioninanywaythatwill interferewiththedutiesand responsibilitiesof thesuperintendent, thebuildingprincipals, theAthletic Director or theBoardofEducation.
AthleticCouncilwill notreviewanypersonnel for employment, re-employment, terminationofemployment, or transferofduties.
AthleticCouncilwill notintervenewiththedisciplineof athletesunlesscalled upon todosoinanappeal situation.
Meetings–Meetingsof theAthleticCouncil shall takeplaceperiodicallythroughout theschool year. Themeetingsareopentoall coachesor interestedpartieswho may present athletic itemsfor discussion. All coachesareencouragedtoattend.
Membership- Current membership of the Athletic Council consists of head coaches of boys’ and girls’ sports at the high school as well as at the middle school, the athletic director and principal at HS and MS, superintendent, assistant superintendent, and teachers.
