Sources of Our Faith
Visualize a beautiful ocean. Healthy and vibrant. Seemingly endless in her ability to run deep, yet benefit all life she touches. This is our UU faith.
Think now of the Sun. Lovingly radiating his warmth to our ocean. We may not know much about him, but we know he is there. We know he is powerful, yet good. This is our source of wonder and mystery.
Think now of the rivers that flow into our ocean. The river of Jewish and Christian traditions that brings us love. The river of World Religions that brings us wisdom. The river of Earth Centered traditions that brings us an appreciation for all life. None of these rivers on their own becomes the spirit of our ocean. But they work together to give our ocean some life.
Think now of some rocks that are in our ocean. Some are little pebbles and some are big boulders. They all stop the flow of our ocean for a moment. This is our source of Reason and Science. They represent the things in life that get us to stop for a moment and think.
Think finally of the fish swimming in our ocean. Loving and respecting each other. They are people of long ago and today who inspire us to be courageously loving. They are you and me.
Each and every day, our beautiful ocean moves in a magical dance. Our simple acts of kindness make her ripple. Our loving actions make her wave. Our grand moments of working together for a common good make magnificent waves that gently crash and spread across our land. What a wonderful thing she is!
