Successful Learning – Responsible Living

27/6/2013.

Dear Parent/Guardians/Carers

We are writing to you as representatives of Morisset High School to express our concern at the level of consumption amongst our student body of “Energy Drinks”. Energy drinks such as Mother, V, Rock Star and Red Bull are banned for sale in all NSW school canteens under the Healthy Foods Policy. Our students gain these drinks before school at Coles or Woolworths. Morisset High School has previously sought the assistance of these retailers to stop selling these drinks to our students before school however we have been unsuccessful in gaining their support.

Energy drinks are high in sugar and caffeine causing significant negative changes in the behaviours of students and can lead to health problems. Some students at Morisset High School have been known to consume up to 4 of these drinks per day whilst at school.

From the start of Term 3 2013 energy drinks will be banned from entering or being consumed at Morisset High School. This decision has been endorsed by the MHS Parents & Citizens Association, MHS Student Representative Council and the teaching staff of Morisset High School. Under this new policy:

·  Students found drinking energy drinks on school grounds will have the drink removed and the contents emptied.

·  Students caught with unopened cans of energy drinks will have them confiscated by staff and taken to the front office where they can only be collected by parents to be taken home.

Students who refuse to cooperate or follow directions under this new policy will have normal school discipline consequences applied to their behaviour.

Parents/Carers/Guardians who would like further clarification of the above information can contact Mr Snedden or Mr Mitten at Morisset High School on 49731999.

Yours Sincerely,

Mark Snedden Darren Mitten Phoebe McIlwraith
