Re: Invitation to CPD Half-Day: ‘Take One’

Dear Head Teacher,

I would like to tell you about an exciting learning project that is taking place at [ORGANISATION]. I would also like to invite you to a free teachers’CPD half-day/DAY at the museum on [DATE].

The museum wants to work with local schoolteachers to investigate the cross-curricular use of museum objects. This pilot project is based on a hugely successful model created by the National Gallery in London, called ‘Take One Picture’.

The volunteerswould like to show how local schools can use the museum as a valuable resource across the curriculum. Our chosen object is [OBJECT NAME] EXAMPLE: a finely carved model of the local church, St Decumans, made from local alabaster. It could be used to explore themes such as local history, alabaster working, beachcombing, model making, junk modelling, building materials and local resources for example. The CPD day will include talks by local alabaster workers, geologists, artists and sculptors. You will receive a free resource pack for use in school to explore the object further. A range of creative outcomes are possible.

It is hoped that the volunteers and staff from [ORGANISATION] can inspire you to take the chosen object and resource pack back to your school and produce something based around it. The museum will ultimately host a special exhibition that will include a celebration of the project and display some of the work that you and your school produce.

Previous CPD days have been held using the model in the South West and below are just a few comments made by teachers attending those days:

What did you think of the Take One project?

“…the day was inspirational and I have been supported in implementing the project in school. This is just the kind of thing we need to keep the curriculum fresh, interesting and creative.”

What was the best thing about the CPD day?

“Because it was so cross-curricular we were able to incorporate normal lessons and didn’t have to compromise on any other areas of learning.”

“It was good for local information and knowledge, pooling ideas and thinking about how to use all the museums resources in school to motivate children.”

To get a sense of what this project may include, you can have a look at the National Gallery’s website ( This includes case studies of projects schools have done based on pictures from the National Gallery’s collection and an overview of how this project will be structured.
