SORT BY SCIENTIFIC METHOD(p.18)

This time, we’re going to take some statements from stories about the scientific method and put them in order (Like the “cake” story I told you.) Make sure to label each step for full credit (Ask a Question, Make a Hypothesis, Test Your Hypothesis, Analyze Your Results, Draw a Conclusion, Communicate Your Findings.) This belongs on Page 48 of your science notebook.

Example (The Cake Story):

The cake was sweet, moist, and chocolaty.

I thought the cake would taste good.

I told all my friends about the cake.

How does that chocolate cake taste?

I was right. The cake does taste good.

I ate the cake.

Another Example:

OK, I’m putting the chemicals together.

Eww, it smells nasty! And it turned green.

What will happen if I mix these two liquids?

I think that it will make iced tea.

I’ll write up the results in my lab report.

My hypothesis was incorrect. This is NOT iced tea!

Answer:

Ask a Question: How does that chocolate cake taste?

Make a Hypothesis: I thought the cake would taste good.

Test Your Hypothesis: I ate the cake.

Analyze Your Results: The cake was sweet, moist, and chocolaty

Draw a Conclusion: I was right. The cake does taste good.

Communicate Your Findings: I told all my friends about the cake.

Answer:

Ask a Question: What will happen if I mix these two liquids?

Make a Hypothesis: I think that it will make iced tea

Test Your Hypothesis: OK, I’m putting the chemicals together.

Analyze Your Results: Eww, it smells nasty! And it turned green. Draw a Conclusion: My hypothesis was incorrect. This is NOT iced tea!

Communicate Your Findings: I’ll write up the results in my lab report.

List #1:

So now I’m telling you – the owner of Jim's likes getting presents.

I wonder if the owner of Jim's will like that ceramic goat?

He was very happy and even gave me a free order of french fries!

I think he’ll like it very much.

My hypothesis was correct. He liked the goat.

I bought the goat and gave it to him.

List #2:

If I kick the frog, nothing will happen to me.

Hey! The frog got all his friends together, and they’re throwing my house in the lake!

NEVER EVER EVER TREAT A FROG BADLY – YOU GOT THAT?

So here I am kicking the frog.

What will happen if I kick this frog?

I was wrong – the frog got his revenge!

List #3

I was partially correct. It wasn’t his CD’s but his old 8-Track Tapes.

I’ll ask my mom to open it and check what’s inside.

There are old tapes in here.

Now I’m going to tell my brother and sister about what we found.

I think he must keep his CD collection in here.

What does my dad keep in this safe?

For extra credit, write a “cake” story by yourself.
