The Texas Tech Center for Biodefense, Law and Public Policy and Texas Tech University School of Law thank you for your interest in participating in the 2012 Writing Competition. Please read these instructions carefully as it contains the comprehensive rules that will govern the writing competition. Topic

A current event within the biodefense community and its potential impacts on the laws and regulations governing biodefense.

Purpose

This writing competition was designed to focus students on current issues in biodefense law and public policy.

General information

The deadline for submitting entries April 1, 2012 at 12PM CST. First Place: $700 award, the winning article will be published in the Journal of Biosecurity, Biosafety, and Biodefense Law, as well as the option to present at the Biodefense Center Symposium. Second Place: $200 award. Third Place: $100 award. Additionally, all submissions have the potential of being read and judged by leading authorities in the Biodefense field.

Winners will be announced May 2012

Conditions

This competition is only open to students currently attending an ABA accredited law school within the United States or those attending an internationally accredited law school.

Judging

The submission will be judged based on content, readability, and quality of work. Any submission may not have been previously published by any other legal or non-legal source or publication.

The Center for Biodefense, Law and Public Policy reserves the exclusive right to the ownership and publication of your submission.

· All submissions must be typed on 8 ½” x 11”

· If a submission is mailed, it should be received by the deadline, not postmarked. It is up to a contestant to ensure that the Center receives the submissions on time.

· Late submissions will not be accepted.

Formatting:

· Spacing: Submissions must be double-spaced, (including footnotes).

· Numbering: All pages must be numbered with ex toto pagination at the bottom of the page (Ex: 1 of 22).

· Font: Must be Times New Roman, 12 point.

· Margins: Must be one inch (1”) on the top, bottom, left, and right of the page.

· Length: Minimum of 20 pages; must not exceed 30 pages.

· Citations: All citations are required to conform to a recognized citation format (Ex: The Bluebook: A Uniform System Of Citation (19th ed. 2010) or Association of Legal Writing Directors (ALWD) Citation Manual (4th ed. 2011).
