Gooood Morning!
Sorry I am away today - Basketball (w/- Abi and Zac :-) ) - 18-7-2012
Please work through the activities below.
Have a great day - Mr "Seijbs" Seijbel...
Overview
Chapter 10 in the text book explores some of the factors that cause people in the developing world to have a much lower health status than here in Australia. There is a lot of information! What we are interested in is not how many individual pieces of information you can recite and remember – even if we were there is still too much to be able to do this well, but rather your ability to examine and particular situation and explain why this situation is occurring.
The Key Knowledge we are targeting is:
· The influence of income, gender equality, peace, education, access to healthcare, political stability, global marketing and physical environments on the health status of developing countries and Australia.
Getting Started
Read pages 286-317. You do not have to read it all upfront now - though I think this would be a priority.

· Kadhi’s story (in case internet is as it has been last two days - no video required) -
Kadhi is a 34 year old male living in a Sub-Saharan African nation. As a teenager he moved from his family’s farm to the city with his father and older brother when his mother died giving birth to his younger sister. His father was unable to find a job, and since then, the three men have been living in a large shanty town on the outskirts of the city, and work in a local factory which makes paper clips and other stationary items for a European company. Kadhi earns US$1.30 a day from this job.
Kadhi sometimes tries to find a better job, but there are not many of these available, and he is not able to read or write. Sadly for Kadhi, he also has a number of ongoing health issues. He is frequently ill due to his poor living conditions, and does not have access to clean water, meaning he also contracts water-borne diseases from time to time. Also, despite having such a low income, Kadhi is also a smoker. He is able to purchase cigarettes because the shop at the factory sells them individually, so whenever he has money he can buy one. He has a high level of cholesterol as many of the food outlets in the city are western style fast food restaurants, owned to international companies which sell pre made foods high in fat and sugar, as well as soft drinks.
