Mobile Device Setup Guide

As Weber State University completes its transition from Novell GroupWise to Google Apps, users taking advantage of mobile access will be required to set up their mobile devices with new settings.

There are only a few short steps that need to be followed in order to make your new Google account synchronize seamlessly between all of your mobile devices. From the titles listed below, find your device type and follow the instructions. If you have any questions along the way, please contact your Campus Technology Coordinator or the IT Service Desk at x7777.

IMPORTANT NOTE: In order for your mobile access to work properly, you must have reset your Weber password after February 20th, 2013. This can be done by navigating to: http://password.weber.edu

Android

In Android, you may use the native Gmail, Calendar, and Contacts apps that come pre-installed on your device. In order to use these apps, you must first set up your Android for Google Apps.

To set up Google Apps:

1.  Open the Settings App

2.  Tap Accounts & Sync

3.  Tap Add Account

4.  Tap Google

5.  Tap Sign In or Existing when prompted for your Google Account

6.  Enter the following account information:

a.  Username: Your full email address (e.g. )

b.  Password: Your password

7.  Tap Sign In

8.  To synchronize email, check Sync Gmail

9.  To synchronize contacts, check Sync Contacts

10.  To synchronize calendar, check Sync Calendar

11.  Check any other Google services you would like to synchronize

12.  Tap Next or Finish to save

13.  You should now see your @weber.edu account listed in the Manage Accounts section

14.  To view your email, open the Gmail App

15.  To view your contacts, open the Contacts App

16.  To view your calendar, open the Calendar App

IMPORTANT NOTE: Although all Android distributions are similar, your device may require you to complete additional steps or may use slightly different terminology. If you have questions, please contact the IT Service Desk at x7777.

In iOS, you may use Google Sync or Google IMAP to view your email, contacts, and calendars. You may choose which setup better suits you, the pros and cons of using each are listed below the respective setups.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before following these steps, it is recommended that you perform a back up to iTunes or iCloud to ensure that your current contacts and calendars from your iOS device are backed up to your computer.

Using Google Sync:
Open the Settings App
1.  Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
2.  Tap Add Account…
3.  Tap Microsoft Exchange
4.  Enter the following account information:
a.  Email: Your full email address (e.g. )
b.  Password: Your password
c.  Description: Google Sync
5.  Tap Next
6.  Enter the following account information:
a.  Server: m.google.com
b.  Domain: (leave blank)
c.  Username: Your full email address (e.g. )
7.  Tap Next
8.  To synchronize email, turn Mail On
9.  To synchronize contacts, turn Contacts On
10.  To synchronize calendars, turn Calendars On
IMPORTANT NOTE: To receive and respond to meeting requests on your device, both Mail and Calendar need to be turned on.
12.  Tap Save
13.  You should now see your Google Sync account listed in the Accounts section
14.  To view your email, open the Mail App
15.  To view your contacts, open the Contacts App
16.  To view your calendar, open the Calendar App
IMPORTANT NOTE: By default your iOS Calendar only syncs your personal calendar. To synchronize multiple calendars, follow these steps:
1.  On your device, open your Web Browser App (e.g. Safari, Chrome, Opera, etc)
2.  Navigate to: https://m.google.com/sync/settings/
3.  Tap Sign in with your Google Account
4.  Enter the following information:
a.  Email: Your full email address (e.g. )
b.  Password: (leave blank)
5.  Tap Sign In
6.  Enter the following information:
a.  Wildcat Username: Your username
b.  Password: Your password
7.  Tap Login
8.  Tap the device you wish to manage
9.  Check the calendars you wish to synchronize
10.  Tap Save
11.  The Calendar App will now be syncing multiple calendars
IMPORTANT NOTE: Google Sync push (real-time) notifications may drain your device’s battery. If your setup results in poor battery life, you may turn off real-time synchronization by following these steps:
1.  Open the Settings App
2.  Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars
3.  Tap Fetch New Data
4.  Turn Push Off
5.  Set Fetch to Manually

Windows Mobile

In Windows Mobile, you may use the native E-Mail, Calendar, and Contacts apps that come pre-installed on your device. In order to use these apps, you must first set up Google Sync.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Before following these steps, it is recommended that you back up your Contacts and Calendars from your phone to your computer.

To set up Google Sync:

1.  Open the ActiveSync App

2.  Select Set up your device to sync with it

3.  Enter the follow account information:

a.  Server address: m.google.com

b.  This server requires an encrypted SSL connection: On

4.  Press Next

5.  Enter the following account information:

a.  Username: Your full email address (e.g. )

b.  Password: Your password

c.  Domain: (leave blank)

i.  If your device requires you to enter a domain, enter: google

6.  Press Next

7.  To synchronize email, check E-Mail

8.  To synchronize contacts, check Contacts

9.  To synchronize calendars, check Calendar

IMPORTANT NOTE: Tasks are not supported and will lead to an error if checked.

10.  Press Finish to save

11.  Press Sync

12.  To view your email, open the E-Mail App

13.  To view your contacts, open the Contacts App

14.  To view your calendar, open the Calendar App

Other

You may access Gmail, Calendar, Google Drive, and a host of other Google Apps from your device’s mobile web browser.

To use your device’s mobile web browser:

1.  Open the Web Browser App (e.g. Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Opera, Dolphin, etc.)

2.  Navigate to: http://m.google.com

3.  Select the Google service you wish to use

4.  Enter the following account information:

a.  Username: Your full email address (e.g. )

b.  Password: Your password
