Summer Lessons

If you have not already booked your summer lessons with me please do not wait much longer. I almost always end up close to 100% booked for the summer. When you go to the “lesson calendar” on my web page, please look at spaces marked in “Red”. These will be the slots available for lessons.

Tennis Tip of the Week

When serving you should always swing “Up and out”. Trying to swing towards the box or down will cause the ball to go into the net too often. By swinging “up and out” it will cause a “whip” movement on your racket that will cause the ball to have a line drive downward trajectory. Another way of saying it is “to hit down, you must swing up”.
The Mental Corner
Practicing with purpose: Most players go out and simply hit the ball back and forth when they “practice”. That’s not practice. That’s hitting. Practicing with purpose is when you set foot on the court with the intention of working on 1-2 very specific skills. It involves drills and a coordinated effort to master an area you have been taught or have been working on. This can also take the form of a competitive game or match where you are working on one specific thing (Ex: Playing a set where you only slice in order to perfect the technique)
Health and Wellness Tip
Tennis Elbow: How to recognize the symptoms
  • Tennis elbow symptoms usually begin gradually. The main symptom is pain, which may begin with a dull aching or soreness on the outer part of the elbow that goes away within 24 hours after an activity.
  • As time goes on, it may take longer for the pain to go away. The condition may further progress to pain with any movement, even during everyday activities, such as lifting a jug of milk. Pain may spread to the hand, other parts of the arm, shoulder, or neck.
  • Usually occurs in the dominant arm (your right arm if you are right-handed, left arm if you are left-handed).
  • Affects the outside of the elbow (the side away from your body). Pain increases when that area is pressed or when you are grasping or twisting objects.
  • May increase in the evening and make sleep difficult. The elbow might be stiff in the morning.
  • Over time may occur with mild activity, such as picking up a coffee cup; turning a jar lid, doorknob, or key; or shaking hands. Simply starting your car could hurt. You may even have pain when you aren’t using your elbow.
  • Other parts of the arm, shoulder, and neck may also become sore or painful as the body tries to make up for the loss of elbow movement and strength.
  • Swelling rarely occurs with tennis elbow. If your elbow is swollen, you may have another type of condition, such as arthritis.

Junior Team Tennis
The Sombathy Tennis Academy has had a great Junior Team Tennis Season. I want to recognize my 18’s Intermediate “Drop Shot” team specifically for winning the Austin TX division and playing for the state title this upcoming weekend at the University of Texas Intramural courts this upcoming weekend. Best of luck Jack, Jacob, Zach, Jordan, Alexia and Anna!
Our next JTT season will be when school starts back up in the fall. Keep an eye out for further information coming.
Player Recognition
I am in the process of creating a “Player Recognition “page on my web site. This will include all of the junior accomplishments during the past year. Awards, recognitions, placements etc.
Please send me a list of your accomplishments from this past year. Please specify
  • What event
  • Where did you finish
  • Please send me a pic of you and your award if you took one.
  • Any school or district honors
  • Please get these to me by the end of May and keep them coming as the year progresses.

Components of Tennis

Each week I will have a focus on one of the 6 components of tennis. Today’s focus is the mental game with the sub section of “self-esteem”. Here are some focus areas.
  • Self-esteem grows by improving the tennis rituals in your life. Eating better, stretching better, becoming more fit, working on drills that build repetitive confidence in a shot etc.
  • This can be done with mental rituals as well. What you think prior to a match and during points.
  • Self-esteem begins with having confidence in your preparation and training and the belief that you can follow your own regiment. I like to call this “leaning on your training”.

Reminder of Cancellation Policy

No penalty for cancellations 24 hours in advance. Cancellations up to 1 hour prior to the lesson are assessed a $10 fee. No shows and cancellations within an hour of the lesson are assessed the full fee of that lesson.

Summer Lessons With Julia

If you are interested in a lesson spot this summer and I am not available, please consider my assistant coach Julia. Julia was a 4 year varsity starter for me at Pflugerville HS as well as team captain two years. She is 10 and under USTA certified and is an accomplished player. Please contact me if interested.

Technology Corner

Here is some great information on tennis frames
Types of frames
A heavier frame = more power.
A heavier frame = less vibration.
A heavier frame = larger sweetspot.
A stiffer frame = more power.
A stiffer frame = larger sweetspot.
A stiffer frame transmits more of the shock load to the arm than a more flexible frame.
A stiffer frame provides a more uniform ball response across the entire string plane.
A larger frame = more power.
A larger frame = resistant to twisting.
A larger frame = larger sweetspot.
A longer frame = more velocity and therefore more power.
A longer frame = more spin due to increased velocity.
