Advanced Vectors

Day 1

Solve the following problems.

1.  You walk 43m south and 22m east. Compute the resultant.

2.  What should be the angle between two vectors of magnitudes 4.70 and 8.20 units, so that their resultant has a magnitude of 11.10 units?

3.  A small plane takes off and flies 112.0 km in a direction southeast of the airport. At this point, following the instructions of an air traffic controller, the plane turns 20.0° to the east of its original flight path and flies 121.0 km. What is the magnitude of the plane’s resultant displacement from the airport? Use diagram below.

4.  To get a cart to move, two farmers pull on ropes attached to the cart, as shown below. One farmer pulls with a force of 37.0 N in a direction 22.0° east of north, while the other exerts a force of 50.0 N in a direction 15.0° west of north. What are the magnitude and the direction of the combined force exerted on the cart?

5.  A hockey puck travels 2.50 m at 12.0o east of south before ricocheting 3.50 m at 72.0° north of east. What is the puck’s resultant displacement?

6.  Bob is pulling on a rope attached to a log with 61N of force. Jake is pulling on a rope attached to the same log with 101N of force. Bob pulls the rope at an angle of 57o to the log. Jake pulls the rope at an angle of 145o . Find the resultant of the two forces.

7.  A sign is hanging by two ropes. One rope is at a 36o with the sign and has a tensional force of 43N. The second rope is at a 61o with the sign and has a tensional force of 82N. How much does the sign weigh?

Day 2

Solve the following problems.

8.  While grazing, a caribou treks 141 m at 43.0owest of south, and then 125 m west. What is the caribou’s resultant displacement?

9.  What is the magnitude of the resultant displacement of a dog looking for its bone in the yard if the dog first heads 65.0o north of west for 17.0 m and then turns and heads west for 15.00 m?

10. A hiker walks 5.2 km at an angle of 32.0o north of west. Then the hiker walks 3.5 km south. What is the magnitude of the hiker’s total displacement?

11. You walk 205m south and 220m east. Compute the resultant.

12. What should be the angle between two vectors of magnitudes 6.8 and 13.70 units, so that their resultant has a magnitude of 14.6 units?

13. While grazing, a caribou treks 95 m at 42.0owest of south, and then 75 m west. What is the caribou’s resultant displacement?

14. Bob is pulling on a rope attached to a log with 12N of force. Jake is pulling on a rope attached to the same log with 29N of force. Bob pulls the rope at an angle of 48o to the log. Jake pulls the rope at an angle of 115o . Find the resultant of the two forces.

15. A sign is hanging by two ropes. One rope is at a 22o with the sign and has a tensional force of 115N. The second rope is at a 49o with the sign and has a tensional force of 62N. How much does the sign weigh?
