Software Systems Specialist II

Purpose

Purpose:

This position is vital to maintaining the infrastructure of the eight CSE teaching and fifteen research labs, five administrative and ten advising machines and also to coordinating all CSE department laptop and desktop encryption projects.

Essential Functions

Function 1:

Maintaining the infrastructure of the eight CSE teaching and fifteen research labs. Provide consulting, problem determination and resolution, system installation and configuration, application support, and needs analysis to support the use of technology by faculty, staff and students for administrative, academic and research effort.

Function 2:

Perform required maintenance such as account management, configuration management (software and hardware), resources management, file systems management, and security and patch management, on all systems to ensure a stable operating environment. Have experience with appropriate system administration tools for monitoring the performance and integrity of the systems. Recommend additional tools and procedures to improve stability and assist in proactively

Function 3:

Supervise departmental laptop encryption. Assist in the planning and implementation of recommended projects. Participate in the deployment of new software and technology. Upgrade hardware and software as needed.

Function 4:

Backup for Manager of Operations and Services and the Software Systems Specialist 1. Have the ability to work concurrently on multiple tasks and projects and to write technical specifications, operational and end user documentation and have the ability to collect the appropriate information from the user to expedite the resolution of the problem. The position requires excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills, and the ability to be self-directed, resourceful and creative.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Bachelors degree in an appropriate field. Two years of experience in software systems programming. Preferred Qualifications:

Experience working in an Engineering Research and Teaching Department (highly preferred). Experience in systems administration, with at least 5 years of experience setting up and maintaining equipment in mixed-networking settings (e.g. combination and interworking of wire and wireless networking in a private LAN with customized working environment). Experience working in a highly mixed operating system environment with a combination and interworking of Windows, UNIX, Linux, Mac OS X, and others. Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to solve complex problems in multistage approaches. Have the ability to work concurrently on multiple tasks and projects and to write technical specifications, operational and end user documentation and have the ability to collect the appropriate information from the user to expedite the resolution of the problem.
