Soccer Handout 09

Soccer is a game that uses a ball and is played between two teams. The object of soccer is to kick the ball through the goal of the other team and score a goal.

The game is started with a kickoff in the center of the field. Each goal is worth 1 point. After a goal is made, the ball is taken back to the middle of the field and the team that did not score the goal kicks off.

There are four ways to kick the ball: 1) to kick the ball with the inside of the foot 2) to kick the ball with the outside of the foot 3) to kick the ball with the heel 4) to kick the ball with the toe. Kicking the ball with the toe causes the ball to go up in the air. It should only be used when there is no one close to the ball when it is kicked.

The three kinds of traps are the foot trap, knee trap, and the shin trap. Traps are used to stop the ball, change directions, and to fool the other team.

Tackling means to take the ball away from the other team. It means you do not touch the player in any way – you just try to get control of the ball and take it the other direction.

When the ball goes out of bounds, a two-handed overhead throw-in is used. Everyone must be at least fifteen feet away for this throw in.

A free kick is used when there is a foul. Fouls include pushing, tripping, shoving, kicking, etc. On a free kick, everyone must be fifteen or more feet away from the person who is kicking the ball. The free kick must be taken where the foul occurred.

The goalie is the only person who can kick the ball at anytime. The goalie can throw the ball out from the goalie, can punt it, do a drop kick, kick it on the ground, and can also roll it out from the goal. When the goalie has the ball, everyone must be fifteen feet away.
