Scalable Network Technologies Awarded US Navy SBIR Project to Develop Scalable Real-Time Analysis Environment for Next-Generation Military Networks

- As JTRS and related DoD networks scale-up to many thousands of radios, new frameworks are needed for accurate insight into full-scale performance -

Los Angeles, CA (February 28, 2008)---Scalable Network Technologies, Inc. (SNT), the leader in wireless network emulation, announced that the company was awarded a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant by the US Navy to build waveforms for software-defined radios for the JTRS program. The $734K award has already started and will conclude by 27 November 2009.

Scalable Network Technologies is the industry leader in the use of real-time wireless network simulation and has developed a one-of-a-kind capability for hardware-in-the-loop emulations, where real networks connect seamlessly with software virtual networks. In recent years SNT has logged a strong track record of SBIR performance with the US Army, US Navy and DARPA, as well as growing sales of their flagship product, QualNetÒ to defense prime contractors, government agencies and network operators.

To accomplish the objectives of this SBIR project, SNT will leverage the unique capabilities of QualNet to create a new evaluation framework that delivers accurate technical and operational insights into full-scale performance of the JTRS and related DoD networks. Of key importance is QualNet’s ability to emulate the “real world” impact of scaling-up to many thousands of on-the-move radios, environmental variables (terrain, weather, atmospheric conditions) and human interactions with the network.

The evaluation framework will be built using advanced hardware/software-in-the-loop simulation technologies that integrate high-fidelity simulation models of the physical environment and network protocols. These models will directly support operational software and network services. Parallel model execution will ensure that as the emulated network is scaled-up, model fidelity is not compromised. Phase II of the project will demonstrate this capability for selected waveforms from the JTRS radio.

A predicted >$220B will be invested in the next five years in new programs for the US Dept. of Defense, Dept. of Homeland Security, and Intelligence organizations in a comprehensive transformation to a network-centric defense force. Given the importance of network-centric warfare as the evolving doctrine, a new generation of more effective network modeling, planning and management, testing and evaluation tools is needed to ensure operability and accuracy in dynamic scenarios. The goal of this SBIR project is an evolved framework that provides a less costly and substantially more effective environment for comprehensive analysis and evaluation of emerging net-centric protocols, applications, services, and training systems from both technical and operational perspectives.

About Scalable Network Technologies

Scalable Network Technologies (SNT) is the leader in parallel processing technology for network performance emulation. The company develops and supports high-fidelity emulation software tools used for predicting the performance of computing and communications networks and network devices. SNT has created a new category of evaluation tools for today’s sophisticated networks that meets the demand for real-time, real-network performance testing. The company’s customers include major aerospace and defense contractors, the US Department of Defense, mobile network operators, as well as research agencies and universities.

About QualNet – the Software Virtual Network
QualNet Developer is a new category of testing/development tool that exercises networks, network elements, and users in ways that legacy modeling and simulation software cannot. QualNet is ultra high-fidelity emulation software that digitally represents an entire network, including every variable that will affect the performance of the real network – devices, communication links, transmitters/antennas, terrain and atmospheric effects, and human interaction/operation. QualNet‘s digital representation of networks is so accurate that no user or connected component can discern whether it’s connected to the emulated network, or the real network.

QualNet offers unmatched platform portability and interface flexibility. Sequential and parallel processing environments on Unix, Windows, Mac OS X and Linux operating systems are supported, and it links seamlessly with other simulation applications and real networks.

Founded in 1999 and based in Los Angeles CA, Scalable Network Technologies is a privately owned corporation. QualNet is a registered trademark of Scalable Network Technologies, Inc. More information on the company is available at www.scalable-networks.com.
