Snicker’s is a darling [color]tan male Shih Tzu but his first 2 years of ld life were hasn’t been not easy. He was taken away from his neglectful owner by Washington Humane Society due to the owner keeping him chained outside 247/7.Not Unsocialized and terribly afraid, Snickers was set to be euthanized at the shelter due to his unadoptable status. We fear that he may have been physically hit when with with his former owner. He was fear- reactive so that meant handling him had to be done with caution to avoid getting a bite from him. This also made it very difficult for the Sshelter to find an adoptive home for him out under this condition. Caring Hearts Rescue (CHR) was contacted by the Sshelter to assess Snickers to see if he could be a fit for our their foster program.I The President, Sabina Poinelli, CHR’s President, went to the sShelter to do the assessment. When I met Snickers, I could see that he was very nervous and uneasy with people. I took careful precaution to keep my movements limited, never touching him, but rather just keeping my distance and giving him treats. My heart went out to this poor soul for all the time he spent alone tied to a tree in someone’s yard in Washington, DC. He was so matted that it was obvious this boy, at 1 1/2one and half years, hads never been seen byto a groomer.

Snickers on day of rescue

Faced with knowing the doomed fate this poor boy faced ahead, one of CHR’saring Heart’s foster parents, Irene and Jim, stepped up to foster Snickers.Snicker’s was sedated to be groomed groomed, with his neutered, and be provided all relevant vaccines. Since and from then on, he hwas been kept in doors to live a normal dog life in foster care. He was taken ent on daily walks and after the first few months of learning to be a dog, Irene started positive training methods to help get Snickers get on track to finding a new home. Holistic calming supplements were added to his diet to help balance out his nervous energy when around strangers.

Over the last year, Snickers has made enormouscome around le progress aps and bounds compared from to the scared and unsocial boy that entered CHR’s aring Hearts Foster Program. CHR aring Hearts Rescue only uses positive training methods especially on dogs like Snickers. When a dog like Snickers comes into rRescue, we try to give show them the reverse of what they were lacking in the neglectful home, r. Respect and trust topping that list.

Our job in rRescue is to rehabilitate the broken and , lost spirits of these homeless animals. It’s a challenging and very demanding task with special- needs rescue dogs. His foster Ddad, Jim, does a great job making sure Snickers gets several daily walks a day to help with his socializing. Jim also makes efforts to help with Snickers’ training.Snickers is very motivated to work for treats and has done a great job with basic commands and training tricks.
